Locally a gentleman is selling a Ford model 19-389 753 backhoe attachment and I was wondering if it would be possible to modify the attachment to fit an IH 656 utility tractor. The tractor is a 61 hp so I think it is large enough to handle it. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd be leery of mounting a full-fledged industrial grade backhoe like that Ford 753 on any ag tractor. Even if the engine was big enough to power the hydraulics, that hoe is capable of causing enough stress to damage or even break the engine/drive train assembly that would bear the brunt of the digging stresses. On an industrial tractor, the hoe is mounted on a sub frame and the engine/drive train does not see much of the hoe stresses. A light "farm grade" 3-point hitch backhoe is a different story, but I wouldnt put a industrial duty hoe on a tractor that was not engineered to take it. I'd either put a lighter 3-point hitch hoe like a Bush Hog or Woods on it or like the other poster says, get a separate industrial tractor to carry the hoe. just my $0.02.

I've got backhoe of that same model on a Ford tractor. It attaches to the tractor by clamping to the rear axle housings and two arms that run to the front of the tractor and bolt to the sides of the frame. It would likely be at least possible to fabricate parts to connect the front, if there is somewhere on the 656's front end designed to handle that much load. The rear end, though, I'd be surprised. The Fords that that backhoe was designed for have a very different rear end; a pumpkin with the differential holding the axle ends together just like in a conventional car or truck. The 656 has the differential mounted forward of the axles and connects to them with pininons, bull gears, etc. The housing is much larger, probably won't fit between the arms of the backhoe. Also, unless by chance the backhoe's clamps happen to line up with the spot on the axle housing where attachments are supposed to attach the housing wouldn't take the stress. You could probably get a Ford 4500 or 3500 for less than it would cost to modify the 656. Good luck, Wm
