Missing Serial Number tags

What reasons are there that they are missing? Tractors that have serial number tags, and they are missing, makes me wonder if they have ever been stolen. Or, do careless people rip them off to paint without concern about the tags. Any ideas? Just curious.

I've got a John Deere H that I am trying to sell
right now, No idea what the serial number is but
the tag is on it . Looks like somebody painted
over the tag then scraped the paint off and tag
rusted so bad it can't be read.

Had a experience like that on my MM ZAN LP. Found a outfit that would make me a new tag (D&D) but the old one was illegible. Called them and they said to pull the old one and I might be able to read from the back side.

Sure enough you could make out the numbers well enough to have new ones made up.

One bit of advice pull the old ones by lifting the rivets out with a mini wonderbar. Was there advice and it worked.

Lot of factors here.

For starters just because a tractor doesn't have a tag I wouldn't be worried about it being hot to the touch. This can be better determined by knowing who you are dealing with.

Some Farmers and operators don't realize the importance of having that number when you are looking up parts. Thusly if they damage the tag in use they don't think anything of it. Years pass tag falls off tractor changes hands a couple of times etc.

Another factor is some tractors the location is conducive to being lost. LA John Deeres had the tag where your right toes will rub it off over time. Farmall F series had the tag on the tool box that tended to rust out. CASE was screwed to the dash and was easy to remove and sometimes get lost.

Also keep in mind some tractors didn't have a tag at all and the number was stamped into a casting somewhere on the tractor. Allis, Ford and Cockshutt come to mind here.

Hope this answers your curiousity.

I always wondered why those old Fords had it stamped only on the engine ? it is pretty easy to get a reman engine and put in one then your number is lost forever.
