Hello fellers, Just wanted to know if there is a way to put a high and low range gear box ahead of the transmission on a farmall H.I used a seven foot tiller that belongs to Mr.Akers and it worked great to loosen up the ground in my garden. It was already plowed and disced this year but it stayed too wet to plant for three weeks and rally settled in and needed worked again to get it planted. It worked great in the garden but my h has a little too much ground speed to use the tiller to break sod and hard packed ground. Is there a factory option on a 300 or 350 that could be added to an H...Just wondering...River Bottom Farmer

MW gearset in reply to River Bottom Farmer, 06-18-2006 08:12:21
I have a Farmall M with the M&W gearset and I don't notice that much difference between low and high. The ground speed is too fast in either setting when in low gear and bush hogging unless you turn down the engine to where there isn't enough power to get through some tough stuff.

You can swap to a lower set of gears.

Since the H does not have live pto, any other type of added hi/low will likely also speed up or slow down your pto, which would not help you.

Seems like too much tiller to me for the tractor.

Not much you can do to slow the old H down. IF you get your hands on low, 1st gear set that would be the way to go. When I was out in California this spring I spotted a few H's and M's at the salvage yard with a 4 speed truck transmissions in the area of the hydraulic belly pump...The salvage yard owner says lots of H's and M's were converted out there for vegetable field work.. The casting inbetween the engine and the transmission was removed, and it was replaced by heavy plate (1" thick) bracketry to hold the auxilary transmission and two halfs of the tractor together...

I think you will find an H waaay underpowered for a 7' tiller in "tough sod". I guess if you have a small spot and make several pass' you could get it to work, but for real field work you need closer to 50 pto hp for a 7' tiller..

Loose soil and sand tills much easier than wet soil or hard sod.

Low, low speed gears were an option on the Farmall H. I'm not sure how many gears you would have to replace in the transmission to put them in though... or where to find a gear set.

The M&W 9 speed is an overdrive, making each gear (one through four) faster along with speeding up the PTO as well.

I know of an H with a GM V-6 in it that has a 4-speed transmission in the torque tube in 2nd gear to slow the tractor down, but that option would also slow down the PTO - making the point moot.

Time for a 300 with a TA!

Steven and others out there..... The TA is not ment to be used as another gear.....you dont want to run your tractor with the TA in LOW.....The TA is ment to get you through a tough spot with out having to stop and shift into a lower gear..... 90% of TA problems is caused by the operator..... ...Don

If the TA is not meant to be used as another gear, why were they installed?

I have talked to many people who have run their TA in low range 85% of the time with no problems whatsoever. I argued with my employer when he told me to till all day with his 504 in 1st with TA in low range - he educated me to the following:

Operator error resulting in TA damage is from the following:
1. Shifting it too slow/slipping the TA clutch. (no brainer - this destroys the clutch)
2. Freewheeling while going forward and in gear with TA in low range. (This wears out the ramp/roller system)
3. Rolling backwards while in a forward gear and vice versa. (this wears out the ramp/roller system)

The throwout bearing is just that, a bearing. The bearings in every other part of the tractor run all the time, so the TA throwout bearing can run as well. I personally have never had a clutch problem resulting from a bad throwout bearing (I have had worn fingers from no free pedal though - totally avoidable with proper adjustment).

Hi RBF , The M had a low , low speed attachment available so maybe the H did too ? Might be worth a shot asking on ebay if anyone has a old setup . Good luck ...Randy
