I just bought a 1952 8N (at least I am told that is the model year), which seems to run pretty well. Six volt system, engine starts and doesn't seem to smoke. A few small oil leaks here and there, but nothing major, it appears. Engine sounds good, and transmission feels ok. I am pretty inexperienced, since I grew up and left the farm over 40 years ago, and we had an allis chalmers CA back in those days. I have no reliable information on how this tractor has been maintained, other than that is was repainted unprofessionally sometime in the recent past. All the sparkplugs, wires, etc., are painted red. Before I start using this 8N, I'd like some advise about what minimum maintainence I should do and what kind of parts, filters, coolant, oil, lubricants, etc., are available and recommended for routine maintenance on a tractor this old. Eventually, when I can retire, I'd want to do more restoration, just to keep it in good running condition as long a possible. Also, my property is a little over 100 acres of north Texas hills, rocks, mesquite, cactus, wildflowers, post oaks, cedars, and native grass pastures. Will be doing routine trail maintenance and periodic mowing of pastures and meadows. Worried about tire punctures from thorns, and wonder what is recommended to stop leaks. Thanks for helping a newbie.

Changing the transmission fluid is a bigger step than it sounds. Check with the guys on the 8N site and be certain that you have the right quantity of the right fluid before proceeding. Rumour has it the wrong fluid (too modern) can wreck brass parts in the hydraulic pump and then the three point hitch stops working.

Also, get the over-riding clutch (unless you don't have enough anxiety in your life already).

1.As below, change ALL fluids, including coolant. Use high quality lubricants, not Wally World quality.
2. Get real brand Ford (1)Operator Manual,(2) Repair Manual, and (3) Parts Manual.
3. Study manuals before fluid changes and rountine maintenance.
4. Go to Ford N board.
Good Luck, Tom

Not to oversimplify but with minimum care you will get good service from your (any) little tractor. Common sence maintenence (which is frequently ignored): 1)Keep all fluid levels up. 2)Never overheat engine. 3)Allow engine to warm up before hard work/heavy acceleration. 4)Listen/watch constantly while operating tractor. If something doesn't sound/look right, shut it off. Little problems can soon become big/expensive problems if neglected.

You"d be wise to change all fluids before heavy work. If you want to get started otherwise, the first thing to do is to get and over-running clutch from Tractor Supply for operating a bush hog. It will protect the tractor, the implement and your life. Cheap insurance. Enjoy!

Owen: Start by checking out the 9N, 2N, 8N board on this site...You'll get more info than you can stand. Also, get a copy of the owners manual and the shop manual..Both are still available as reprints, just look at the top of the column on the left side of this page.

Good luck...
