I've had several Eastern Red Cedar Trees in the pasture attacked by a deadly disease known as "Goat Blight". It causes the needles to be stripped from the entire tree except for the very top. Usually, it will affect trees around 6' tall. There is no known cure. It is caused by close contact with goats. In the photo, the tree on the left is a normal, healthy, Eastern Red Cedar Tree. The tree on the right has been affected by "Goat Blight". The disease will, most likely, move on to the healthy trees as soon as all the needles are gone from the affected one. It is transmitted through goat saliva.

Dashshund, What is you point? The sooner we rid this country of cedars the better off it will be!!! That shining example of a dying cedar tree is now ready to be shredded down, and not a tear will be shed from anyone here in TEXAS. These water robbing, scourge of the land scapes are more plentiful that fleas on a dog. The water/moisture in you soil profile will be now available for more productive use like..... grass for livestock! Heck, stake out a goat near ever cedar tree you have, that way you can get them gone sooner.LOL!!!
Better yet find a neighbor with a 100hp tractor and a good 15 ft batwing shredder and just mow them off at ground level. Thanks for the tip on the Goat Blight, Market is down now on Goats so lets all stock up and get rid of this scourge of the pastures!!!!! !
Later,
John A.

I'd need about a million goats! I built a tree shear that slides over my FEL that I use to clear them, in addition to the goats.

I too have something killing my cedars down here in Texas. It is a catapiller. The things fall over and migrate to big piles. Good thing.

I've heard of a cure that does work.. but costs a bit and is labor intensive. You put 3 or 4 plastic t-posts int he ground around the diseased tree, and any others you want to protect.. then take some 2x4 fence.. or even chicken wire, and make a shell around the tree.. make sure the fencing is a few inches off the ground... do this for all the trees.. now buy a fence charge that will power about 10-20 miles of fence, get 2 good 6' copper ground rods, and some insulated fence wire.. ground the fencer, and hang it on a wood post near the diseased trees.. connect up the insulated wire so that all the fencing around the trees are hooked together... power it up... I guess it must be the 'ions' given off by the hot grid that protects the trees.. but in any case.. i know it works.. My horses used to strip the bark off my loquat trees.. I used this remedy, and the 10 mile fencer.. I bet it threw the horse back about 6' when it's nose touched the hot grid... killed their taste for loquat I can tell you! Worked on the cows too...

I agree with Weldon K. Maybe it's just the photo, but they don't look like any cedars I have seen. They look more like some kind of fir in the photo, or maybe a hemlock.

Deer, however, do love cedars.

These are younger cedars. You cut them down and they have red hearts and are very aeromatic. They are actually from the Juniper Family. Thy turn red or brown when it is dry.

I live in the east and the cedars that grow here have red heart wood and are called Eastern Red Cedar, but they do not look the same as your trees. The cedars here have seed that are spread by birds. They grow like weeds and can take over an area in a few years if not mowed, sprayed or dug up.Goat Disease sounds like a good thing.

Yeah - they spread like wildfire! I can remember my Dad baling hay on part of the place 35 years ago. Now it is so overgrown that the rabbits need a chainsaw to get through. Last owner didn't do much to take care of the place.

But you are wrong, it is not just goats that cause that disease, white tailed deer will cause the same thing.

I don't mind when they munch the trees out in the pasture, but I get a little upset when they jump the fence and munch the cedars that I transplanted to be a windbreak.

Yep, the ol' goat blight'll do it every time. in reply to Dachshund, 06-03-2006 14:37:27
But I think it only effects metric trees, right?:-) Last I heard, you mix a gallon of hogwash in some dihydrogen monoxide and spray it on the tree, seems to help some.:-)

GEEZ GUYS! I don't want to ruin the whole pasture by spraying THAT suff all over! I heard that if it rains on it, it REALLY makes a mess!

Old Pokey,
You wrote: "dihydrogen monoxide"
Isn"t that the same as HIJKLMNO ?
BTW a lot of pupils think it must be poisonous like carbon monoxide

In this 1 acre pen I have 6 goats - 2 mommas and 4 little ones that are 2 1/2 months old. They like grass, but love the "trash" stuff!

I'll be darned. How many goats to the acre does it take? And will they leave the grass for the bossie cows? Here the cedars are starting to look brown any way.
