Hi All,

Got my haying crew all lined up fer this year. Pretty sure this is all the hired help I'm gonna need. :>)

After I got the steering, the missin' engine figured out and the brakes cinched up on that little Hydro 70, it is really trying to become my favorite. What a sweet little tractor; that hydro tranny is soooo darned nice!

If it just wasn't so darned thirsty. :>(

I saw in the paper that Jenners up in Rapid City have an 86 Hydro diesel if you get the itch to trade for something that sips instead of gulps.

Pretty snappy lookin' crew! Allen, I missed something. What did the problem/solution end up being on your Hydro steering? Is it the correct front end after all? Glenn F.

Hi Glenn,

Naw, it is totally screwed up. The front end turns out to be off a 560. These old steel tube types have the stops built into the forward mounting bolster.

So, a fellow down the road a piece showed me how to fix it on the cheap. He ordered me a couple of short steering arms and that rear mount and told me how to cut the stops out of the front bolster.

While I was at it, I took two shims out of each brake drum to give me a little better brakes. She comes around pretty darned good now and will be even better after the shorter arms get here.

here in the south everything would be rusted/stuck together if they sat out all the time. had adealer here that said it was strange that a farmer would buy a tractor to make a living with and park it under a tree year around, but he would buy a car to drive on sunday and never let it get rained on.

You're probably right; it might be a "regional" thing.

Heck, I don't think I saw a machine shed around here until sometime in the early seventies. They are a purely "extra" in this country; not necessary at all.

You can get away with letting them set out in Nebraska but I had to let one of mine set out here in Mi this winter and darned if the engine isn't stuck. What a bummer.

Allan,

I'm cursing the guy(s) who let a Ford 4000 sit outside for the last 20 years. MAkes it awfully had to replace parts and take it apart to paint. What ever floats your boat. Paul

Nice looking line up. I'm trying to get my haying stuff figured out as well. Drove this new to me rig 120 miles to get it home today. It'll do about 50 wide open. Made the trip in about 3 hours including a short lunch stop.

Its a self propelled bale wagon. It picks up and stacks small square bales out of the field. This model can pick up 160 bales and set them in a stack. Then you unload the entire stack and do it again.

Hey Dave,

I thought you were crazy this morning when you said you'd be haying in three weeks.

Boy, now I dunno now. I think that darned alfalfa grew three inches just this afternoon. Wow, is it ever taking off! Guess I'd better get busy too.

I can't say for certain when I'll start, but I always plan on starting around the 1st of June and try to get done with 1st by July 4th, then wait a week and start 2nd and get it done by county fair (August 10th or so) Then it all just runs together for 3rd and 4th. These are the dates my grandfather taught my dad, and my dad taught me, and they seem to work pretty good most years.

I just have to ask, 1. is it diesel? and 2. how much fuel to get it home at 50mph?
I picked up a hay wagon running gear at auction today, best deal I have got all year, maybe longer, $45.00. Pulled it home at 35mph. I bet you are glad you at least have green grass, all that red stuff setting around. LOL Bob

Its a 460 gasser. I tried and tried finding a diesel that I thought was worth the asking price. Just couldn't get it done. I haven't figured out how much gas it took to go the 120 miles. Just guessing by the guage about 20 gallons. About 6 miles to the gallon. David

Equipment lasts much better sitting out in a dry climate than in a wet one, obviously.

That's why the military boneyards are out in the desert, practically no moisture related wear out there ( except for lack of moisture ).

I would hate to leave tractors out here in Missouri, but in the dry states, they get so little rain, the sun will be the only thing that hits them, and that will just fade the paint a bit....totally different climate.
