Update on the weak spark

It was the coil. I don't recall where I got the coil I put in the 1010 but it went bad. I got the one the parts book at the store says to use, a 6 volt coil, and it started right up. The coil in it was a 12 volt. I tested the resistance and the 6 volt had about 1.5, the 12V about 1.3 so it seems it was bad. Now I have to check and see if there is a ballast resistor somewhere in the wiring or switch I was unaware of. The gen is 12V and the lights are 12v so there must be something there I didn't know about.

Thanks to all who helped!

The resistor is built into the key switch on the JD 1010s, 6 volt coil is correct.

Bret, Congrats and thanks for the report. If the dealer insisted it uses a 6 volt coil and it indeed has around 1.5 ohms, it certainly must have an external ballast resistor or a resistive wire link or even a thermistor somewhere upstream after the switch and ahead of that coil. Otherwise, the coil would draw something like 8 amps versus the more normal 4 amps and it would run very hot plus the points will burn up prematurely. She certainly will throw a good hot spark in the meantime however lol.

Best wishes

John T

Thanks John- I have the big shop manual on the 1010 and will take a look in the wiring diagram for a resistor. I recall taking a switch apart and repairing it and seeing the resitance wire, but that may have been a different tractor.

As long as I have your ear I'll bend it a little- As I understand it a good condensor should have the needle peg then return to zero when tested for resistance and a bad one will just peg, correct? Thanks- Bret
