Well, it actually started the night before with a call from neighbor that cow was out on highway. All cows were innocently in pasture when I checked. Yesterday morning found some tracks along road, narrowed the suspect list to 2 cows, decided to sell both(they were not good producers anyway) Suspected one had gotten out before and jumped the fence to get back in. Not much cure for a jumper but to sell her. Sold them today, dodging much needed rain in the process. The hard part was repairing one of the homade axles on the homade cattle trailer I made about 20 years ago. Used the same Lincoln 225 stick welder to repair it that I used to make it. Wish every piece of equipment gave the kind of good service that welder has given. BTW they didn't have a TSC or Northern to buy axles from around here then.

Minimum size of cattle trailer: Having one that has 2 compartments has really been nice. Load some in the front, close center gate, load some more in the back. Full grown cow need about 7 feet of space, so for 2 compartments need 14 foot long trailer. The new goosenecks seem to start at 16 feet which is better. Nice feature to have on a new one is a front side door in case you need to sort cattle.

My Dad had a cure for the couple of cows that liked to jump the fence into the corn field. After chasing them back in everyday for a week he took the 20 gauge shot gun with some light bird shot and pepper their back sides. That was the end to them getting into the corn.

Seams like every bunch of cows has a couple of crazies. My brothers cows would get out every now and then. After heading them down the road about a 1/2 mile they would be within a few feet from the gate, and going back in, then the couple crazies would turn and run, and all the other's would follow. We would do every thing over again. Stan

I try to stay away from cattle - they enfuriate me!! Too big to push around and to dumb to know when ya' mean business!

(They are THE reason that cowboys had gunfights - come into after a day of being around 1000lb dummies with a mind of their own, get all tanked up, and then take it out on each other. The cows always escape - until butchering time!!)
