I got a call from a neighbor (lady) who lives alone. Her little dog killed a rat in her house. This is a pretty residential (rural) area, without alot of feed piles, grain storage, junk yards, etc. Around the house is mowed yard, flower boxes, etc. Anyhow, whats the best way to get rid of these things? I really need to help her out as she doesn't ask for much, so when she does, I guess I'd better be the neighbor.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Clean clean clean and leave no food for them around. Put the dog's food in an airtight metal container when its not being fed to the dog. If the rats don't have anything to eat they won't stick around.

We used to have terrible mouse troubles in my camp but my great uncle had stored alot of blankets and rugs inside. Once we got rid of that junk the mice didn't have as easy a time building nests so they don't get in as much.

i have used poison from tractor supply that comes in bait packs. one bite kills rats and mice and the bait pack can be thrown into places that pets cannot go(as in the pvc pipe mentioned in an earlier post) found a dead rat in my shed that was still trying to store more of the poision in a quart jar when he died, had about an inch of poison in the jar at the time. name of the poison is rampage or something like that. lol

My neighbor was having a problem with a warf rat coming into her laundry rooom and eating the dog food. She bought some of those glue traps and put them in the laundry room. Called me about 2 days later and said someone was in the house. I could hear banging around the house over the phone. Went over and found this rat about 14" long and about 8" high. Had 2 glue traps stuck to his feet and he was jumping up and down. He jumped up the stairs and I caught him with broom handle in the bathroom.

Thanks for all the help - I think I'll try the PVC thing today, with the gloves idea for smell. Sloroll - I'm not into the cats idea, but that is one heck of a good picture!

Thanks for all the ideas.

Bill

The big 'ol regular snap traps work good. If there is a corcern for the dog's welfare, check with your local farm supply store for live traps. Sticky traps work well. I always put a dab of cheese or peanut butter in the middle to attract them. Only use D-Con or piosons if you are sure the pets won't get into them. And...whatever you use, handle the traps or poisons with rubber gloves. If the rodents smell human scent on them, they won't come close. Hope this helps!

Sounds like the little dog is doing a good job. As long as she don't have a bunch of junk piles I don't know what else you would do. Those critters move around some and if there is a way they will get in. You might check around her house, look for cracks in the stone wall, etc, It don't take a very big hole for a rat. Now mice are another matter, they are almost imposable to keep out. At least I have never lived in a house that was tight enough to keep mice out.

If you want to use rat bait here is what works around out buildings.

Cut some 2" pvc pipe about 18" long and put the bait in the middle and lay along the outside edge of house.

Pets can't get it and it makes a nice little dinner table for the mice and rats.

Good Luck.
