Bought a 6.5 HP gas pressure washer (2550 psi) from Lowes last year. Briggs & Stratton engine.

I changed the oil last year after 1 hour of use, then again this year after 4 more hours of use. The old oil is very grey with shiny silver particles....glistens in the sunlight.
I have never seen oil so grey colored...usualy old oil is black....

Is this OK and am I just seeing the break in wear of the engine?
The manual says to change oil after 5 hours of use, then every 25 hours...
It's still under warranty, so I;d like to know what to do.

Stroed in basement in reply to New owner, 04-17-2006 13:39:59
The pressure washer was blown out with compressed air and carried into my basement for the winter....no chance the seal froze....regardless, the seal for the pressure pump being out - how would that allow water to get into the engine?

I think this is NOT water, but aluminum that has turned the oil grey.

Thanks for the input - I have 4 months before the warranty is up! WIll use it again and see if the oil turns grey again.

I agree with Big JT. If, and that means I'm assuming, it was kept outside, it probably froze up and broke the seal, and now water is getting into the oil.

Sounds to me like you will be testing out that warranty.

Grey would say to me that you have water in the oil. Would guess a group of seals in the pump are bad. Shiny metal flakes would be something disentigrated inside or is starting to. You could try running another 10 or 20 hours but don't let the warranty lapse without getting a documented complaint.

One thing did you keep this pressure washer in a heated building all winter? If not the waranty may be void.

I agree that grey oil may have water in it.There should be a drain hole between the pump and engine to allow any water that gets through the pump seals to drain away before it gets to the engine. there is also a chance of water getting in the engine oil if the machine is stored where there is a lot of humidity or water spray from the pressure washer. I would put a sample of the engine oil on a white paper towl and let the oil soak in for a few hours before examining the paper under a magnifying glass to check for metal particles. Those little splash oiled briggs engines mix a lot of air with the oil,and air bubbles look an awful lot like bits of metal.

You will do that little engine and yourself a big favor if you use only B&S or Mobil 1 multiweight SYNTHETIC oil. Multiweight SYNTHETIC motor oil is highly recommended by B&S for a Briggs engine for any load and any temperature conditions, unlike mineral oil where B&S recommends different weight mineral oil for different operating temperatures. I have been using Mobil 1 synthetic oil in all my small engines for 20 years. Oil consumption goes to almost 0 and they start much easier. You will get much longer engine life with less chance of scoring a piston or cylinder if you overheat the engine or rev it up too soon while cold.
