Does anyone know how you would figure out how much horsepower at the drawbar you would have with a 100 hp engine?

Would you have more than 50 hp?

Depends, that"s a very opened ended question. Crawler tractor, metal tracks or rubber tracks? Wheeled tractor 2WD, 4WD, duals, bia or radial tires, floatation tires or tall narrow tires, hard surface or sand? Transmission gear type, hydrostatic or clutch pack planetaries. Could be anywhere from 55 to 92 HP.

While the 70 percent thing is close enough. The Neb test run actual tests. This takes in to acount the efecency of the transfer gears. This can vary depending on the transmission and drive gears. Even with thick or thin oil in the gears. For many years people did not like auto transmissions in cars because they wasted power over the stick shifts. They gave lower gas milage. FWIW, stationary engines used to be rated at 80 percect of the max power they could develop on the test stand. For continuous duty.

I got curious and had to look it up. The formula I found is a simple one. Maximum drawbar hp is 70% of net engine hp. 100 x 70%= 70. bill

Yes, it would be way more than 50. I"d guess around 90. If you"d post back with the specific model you"re curious about, mabey somone could give you an exact number. The difference between PTO hp and drawbar hp will vary a little from model to model.

Take a 4020 Deere diesel, for example:

Nebraska Test Number 849
PTO HP: 91.2
Drawbar HP: 78.0

Obviously, the ENGINE HP would be a bit more, I'm not sure how much.

Hope this helps!
