When I first start the tractor the hydraulics shake for 20 to 30 seconds before they smooth out.
It seems like the oil drains back to the reservoir when it sits. What do I look for to prevent this.

Agree on your drain back. Not restricted to the 4430, nor Deere. Common occurrence; longer it sits and colder it is the worse it is.

Solution could be to insure that your lift and anything else hydraulic is in the lowered position and leave it there till the fluid has had time to circulate.

Had one tractor that I thought I needed mains cause of bad noises at startup (I'm kinda real deaf). Turned out it was nothing more than my hydraulics coming up to position rattling like you mentioned.

Beins I had just paid $17k for that thing I was real glad I had misdiagnosed the noise; real glad....especially since the tractor only had 3900 hrs on it.

Mark

If "non wet clutch" oil which is cheaper has been added to the trans/hydraulic system. Odds are she's on her last legs. The incompatable oil softens the wet clutch/brake facings like oil on a rubber tire. The facings flake off and steel to steel contact occurs. This wrecks the pto clutch/brake, trans high/low clutch pack and the brakes. Pull the trans pump pre-screen and the paper filter and see if they are full of fiber and/or metal cuttings. It could be just lots of hours with a bit of dirt and water in 20-30 year old that has worn the pump(s).

Thats kind of normal for a deere but your charge pump could be getting weak.
