I am having my new slleves installed in my block. The books that I can actually find on the internet say to install the sleeves even with the deck. Is there any variances allowed ? My sleeves sit just below the deck. About .005 to .010. Can I run this way or should I take another route.

Thanks

Don't know about ford tractors, but the international I had, had shims that you put under the top of the liner to get the proper spacing. Rebuilt an old ford back when I was in college vo tech school but don't remember how we did it. Call your ford tractor dealer and find out if they have the shims.

With wet-sleeved engines, especially diesels, sleeve "standout" is CRITICAL (Typically,in the neighborhood of .005" to .007"), as the sleeve itself must seal to the headgasket, and be clamped TIGHT between the counterbore in the block, and the headgasket for the seal to last.

However, with the old, low compression, gas, dry-sleeved "N"'s, it is NOWHERE as critical. The head gasket will seal to the deck surface of the block. If there is a question of the sleeves being a bit loose, and trying to move up and down with the pistons, Loctite sleeve retainer will eliminate any possibilty of sleeve movement.

Decking the block may cause more problems than it solves, because of potential piston and cylinder head interferance.

If you want another opinion on this, post on the "N" Forum, and ask ZANE, longtime Ford mechanic and "guru" his opinion.

Liner are critical and so is the gasket . DO not use a genuine ford gasket if there is any
question about the liners not being tight. The ford gasket does not cross the flange of the liner
anywhere, buy an aftermarket gasket , it crosses the liner and will hold the liner down tight in the block. If the liner is permited to move up and down
that will break the flange off , liner will go to
the pan. I can asure you that a liner in the pan is not a pretty sight, crank makes scrap iron out of it. I have fixed a few with that disease .

If the counterbores are not all the same depth , milling the
deck won't cure the problem. If they are uneven,
the cure is to make counter bore repair sleeves
from pieces of repair sleeves . Bore the block
about a quarter inch deep , install the repair ,
face it flush with deck, bore it to fit the sleeve and the proper counter bore depth.
