Saw a post on the Farmall Forum reminding about National FFA week and got to wondering how many of yall are former FFA members? CL - Former OK State Officer and recipient of the American Farmer degree in 1987.

Hobart, Oklahoma class of 1992. Four years of FFA. Still got the blue corduroy in closet. As does my dear ole dad. Neither of ours will fit. Important thing is all the lessons learned. I would say that Vo ag is the most vauable program in high school when properly instructed. I was lucky to have a great FFA advisor/teacher. I received swine and small grain proficency awards several years. Also was a member of one of the best field crops judging teams in the state at that time. My way of giving back now is helping my local FFA chapter on their first tractor restoration project. Thanks Case Lady for a great topic. Im flooded with memories just reading these posts.

64-68 held office every year, president one. I wish Roberts rules were used in the meetings I attend now like they were in FFA. When we have class reunions now our old ag teacher is always the first name mentioned when inviting teachers and last time the only one invited.

You older guys (perhaps some don't remember everything as well as they should) might remember 1964 was the year the jackets had the high shrink feature as a option.

My 15 yr old is in FFA, but the writing is on the wall as they combined three towns to have enough for a small chapter. Dave NE IA

1999-2005 My chapter had a Jr. High program and I jumped at the chance in 7th grade. Did a lot of contests, nearly every one my chapter went to. Ag Mechanics and Public Speaking were my favorites. National and State conventions nearly every year too. State Degree recipient Junior year. Thanks for bringing up this topic, it's great to share and even better to hear others' stories.

53/54, Wenatchee HS, Wenatchee WA. Moved and did not have FFA in the new school. Sure was fun and I learned a lot. We had a green house above one of the buildings, tried different varieties of grains and forage. Wish I could have gone to some of the competitions but was kept busy on the farm.

Wasn't offered in my town but my grandma was the founder of the Buchanen Badger 4-H club so naturally I had to join. At 1 time there were 3 generations involved, My grandma was the main leader, my mom and dad were project leaders and me and my 4 older brothers were all in it. The club is still going, but the newer members who joined took over and turned it upside down. Now I'm a resource leader (dog project) for the county.

Was a memeber for four years, 01-05, sadly though, our FFA was in major need of revival, and hopefully we will get that when our ag teacher leaves, that is if our wonderfull school board, decides to leave the ag science in our school, hope so, its a wonderfull program, As long as the one who is in charge cares.

Almena Kansas chapter, Was Sentinel and President. State Farmer 1967. My Dad was made a Honorary Member in 1967. I was honored to present him the plaque.

I believe in the Future of Farming, with a faith born not of words, but of deeds, achievments won by past gererations of farmers thru the promise of better days through better ways have lead us to the blesssings we now endure.

I believe to live and work on a good farm is pleasant as well as challenging for I have known both the joys and discomforts of farm life and hold an inborn fondness for those associations which I cannot deny.

Gee thats all I remember of the creed. The rest will probably come to me at 3 AM. As a greenhand I recited that to the hall.

Fond memories. Nice to get them jogged.

Stet, MO 1958-1962. State soil judging a year or so, state chorus a couple of years. Chapter reporter. Your post brought back a few memories like local 100 bushel corn contests, making cement hog troughs for sale and building hog sheds and loading chutes for sale to the local farmers. Sure learned a lot that has done me well the past 40-some years. Larry

Yep, we sure did. I think I went down there all four years I was in high school. Usually there were ten or so of us guys down there showing. We usually did pretty well too. I found some of my old ribbons from the state fair as well as some of the fairs like Trenton and the Ray and Carroll county fairs the other day. The kids and grandkids were pretty impressed that "Papa" did those sort of things in high school. This thread brought back some pretty good memories. Larry

Chapter and District Officer 1977-1980, lots of awards and great memories. I help out two local chapters with judging, hauling and giving kids projects to learn on. Best youth organization out there!

Pround to wear that jacket for 4 years. 1998-2002. And I can still fit in it. I was chapter secretary for the North Judson Indiana High school chapter for all four of those years. And to Case Lady, thanks for letting us all rehash these memories one more time. Its been fun reading

Yep, four years and did about every contest and state and national conventions. There is no bigger opprotunity in education than what goes on in the FFA chapter. Truely the only place you can put together everything you are learning and apply it to real life situations. I learned alot from my ag teacher and being involved with FFA but I am most proud of the help I have been able to give the chapter in the years since my graduation. Working with the young men and women in FFA today has been very rewarding. I have meet so many good young people. My door is always open for them to ask for help. Doesnt matter if they need some simple advice or someone to judge a contest. I have went and planted their corn test plot when I still had corn to plant myself. I do what they ask without hestitation because someone did it when I was there and it is a debt I am happy to repay. Looking forward to judging a district record book contest next month allready! Thanks to everyone who has ever helped a FFA member. bill

Grew up on Main St. Worked on a farm, went to college for Ag engineering, and now have my own dairy farm. I had no FFA in my school to join. Wish we had FFA, I would have joined right up.

Makes me think of what someone said to me when I took an adult computer course a year ago which was mostly high school students from the city. I was talking about how in high school, we build a small sand box in foresty class and had a 5 gallon pail with a piece of hard plastic drainage pipe about 5ft high x 4" in diameter, with sand filled in around it. It was a game to test your skills with a backhoe, the backhoe was backed up to the sand box and a soup spoon was duct taped to one of the bucket teeth and a fresh (not boiled) egg was placed in that sand box. The objective was to pick up that egg with that spoon and lift it up to the top of the pipe and drop it down the pipe and this was timed with a stopwatch. The response was "they actually let you drive a backhoe?, where'd you go? redneck school?", I said "yup".

I was in FFA all 4 years of high school, sure do miss it. My biggest regret was not taking full advantage of what was being offered at the time, I'm wishing I'd entered more contests and applied myself more, and I went to the national convention during my senior year, and that was a trip I'll never forget, getting to travel down though some of the lower states I'd never seen before and getting to see the large grain farms, and enormous equipment that looked small on those huge fields, the awesome farm machinery show, the actual convention, talking with people from other states, and the gorgous women!. FFA definatly gave me some fond memories and I do miss it. Still got my blue FFA jacket upstairs, I've felt the urge to dig it out and try it on just for the heck of it. FFA gives young people a chance for adventure if you want it. If I could do it all over again, I'd make sure to make it to national convention all 4 years!, that was awesome!.

That is a wonderful question CL, I was Chapter Reporter '80-81. 4 year member of Cattle Showing Team. Had great time attending 2 State Conventions and numerous area an regional competitions in Forestry, meat judging and Palimentary(sp) Team. Met a former Ag Teacher from local area school just recently and in visiting with him I told him that the only two HS classes that I actually learned useful stuff in was AG and Algebra, and I still use the stuff I learned back then in my daily life. I wish I had taken advantage of the welding instruction that was available back then....

I still call and seek advice from one of my old AG teachers, not only was he a great teacher he is also a fine example of a good Christian man who lives his life to a high moral standard.
