Today I put my 99 F-350 dually into 4 wheel drive, the light said it was engaged but it was,nt. I shifted it into different gears and backed it up but it would,nt engage. Any suggestions where to start on this? I miss the good old mech. linkages.

Alan,
There's a service bulletin for that problem #04-18-5.It pertains to the front locking hubs where axle shaft contact causes early failure.Let me know if you want me to fax or e-mail it to ya.
Get all wheels off the ground & vehicle on jack stands to see if front drive-shaft spins when running in gear w/4wd on.This will tell you if t-case is engaging.~brad

9 times out of 10 it is the automatic front hubs not engaging.Remove them, install them in the nearest trashcan and replace with manual locking hubs.

Yes i know , just to bad they do not have any good engines any more . Trucks are not trucks anymore what ever happened to a real truck not the yuppy trucks of today with leather and heated seats and all this electronic garbage with price tags higher the i paid for a 4300 I H eagel . I can remember when people laughed at my buddy and i when we bought the first 4X4's around here back in 73, everybody was asken us if we were out of our minds you don't need a BIG 4x4 just a waiste of money then by 75 more were turning up along with the price tag i gave 4000 bucks for my 73 f250 with power steering and my first auotmatic with posi trac. high out put heater that would melt the soles off your boots and a AM radio and west coast mirrors and step bumper my buddys truck was a 4 gear with no power steering and that is one thing that he wished that he would have got as over rough ground it was a thumb buster . And the nice thing about it was when it got dirty inside ya could open both doors and take the garden hose to it and it would be clean seats and all.

Have someone twist the switch while you are under the truck with it in park or the wheels chocked, and listen for the motor on the transfer case to kick in. You should also hear a relay or switch in the cab. Check all fuses and fuse boxes for a relay that may be bad.

First: do as WvaJim suggests and check for motor engagement before you tear into some other part of the drive chain. The motor has a screw drive that tends to hang up at times. You will find it on the back of the transfer case. It is not hard to fix. Email if you need more info, Pete
