I have a Farmall H that has a custom loader. It has a truck front end and a box frame. I would like some more power. Has anyone ever done a V-8 conversion on an H like they do on the Ford's? Anything for some more power would be good.

How about a little cummins 4BT? Or a small diesel engine out of semi trailer refrigeration unit? Or an old detroit diesel 4-71! That would be cool!

If you wanted to stick with IH you could try one of the 304, 345 v-8s... those might be a tight fit...

The only weakness in a H rear end is wear from thousands of hours in the field doing work. They are plenty stout to hold up to a V-8 car engine putting around doing loader chores. Think about it guys, if a 9 inch ford rear end can hold up in a 3000 pound drag car with slicks and 500 horsepower with a 6000 rpm launch dont you think a 1500 pound cast iron rear end with those beefy gears and axles and bearings can hold up to a small block ford motor idling around the farm? They use M's all the time with V-8 motors for pulling and they are just a real heavy duty H when you get down to it and they have very few problems tearing out the rear ends. I know you are turning big tires and they are geared down and the torque is tremendous but I believe they are plenty stout for just about any v-6 or v-8 car engine. Later.

That is a very good point. I mainly want more power so I can spin my hydraulic pump faster so the loader will work faster. Also it would be nice to be able to go up hills (when I drive on the road) in 5th gear. I have an International V-8 truck engine that is 345 cubic inches. The truck is rusted out but it is a great engine. The frame is all custom so it would easily take the weight of the V-8 and the size difference.

Well I am proud to say the H with the Flathead is MINE and IS for Sale!!! It all works well, and you would swear IH put it there. I bought it to bring to my pulls and had a LOT of fun with it. I started a Landscape Business and I need a dump truck so I am parting with some of my Toys. Its in Southern New Hampshire .

That H with the 2.8 v-6 belongs to Clem Seivert in Granger Iowa. He did a really good job, and it runs very well.

The H chassis and rear end gears will stand up to more power, but will not last very long with any major increases in power. If you want something that will do serious loader work I would suggest the purchase of a skid steer loader. These small and mighty rigs will run circles around any farm tractor with a loader.

I just want more power for loader work mainly. Right now it has a live hydraulic pump driven from the belt pulley. I would do a diesel too if I could get some more power. This is not a pulling tractor but a work tractor. Thank you

Here is an H with a flathead Ford V-8:

Here is a Super H with a GM 2.8 V-6:

The V-6 has a 4 speed transmission behind it, locked into 2nd gear so it can run in its powerband and keep the H going the right speed.

Sorry I don't have more details, just the pics.

For more power/engine swap with minimum problems- check Puller forum archive-Chad S had a IHC 460 engine in a H, bolted right up to transmission bell housing. He had some techniques for H engine to get it to 35 to 50hp and still be work usable- basicly bringing H to super H/350 specs with later parts- cam, carb, bore kits. Couple postings about useing combine/utility engines into tractors also. V8 conversions could have a few problems. Note that Ford N/V8 swaps are usually show and parade projects as rear ends were designed for about 20-30 hp and V8s usually about 50hp if restricted to under 2000 rpm, 100hp hot rods with stock rears are not really usable in fields. H drive design used in 460 handled 50 hp. Are you interested in more hydraulic power for your loader? A 300/350 engine would give you about 40hp instead of 25, would have a live hydraulic pump possible. RN
