Looks like one is going in a few miles south of here. SUre looking good for the local farmers and community (YEH!). I'm not worried about odor but am concerned about the steam plume. Any guesses about the hight AGL it reaches? Or does it dissapate very low? Thanks.

Yeah, I am about 5 miles from New Energy in South Bend, IN. South Bend Regional is only 5 or 6 miles away from the plant also. When they first opened in the 80's till about 3 years ago you could smell it now and then but now they have changed some things around and I don't ever smell it unless you are in the plant, we have to drive and park right next to one of the waste collection ponds (I guess thats what you call it). On some days the steam hangs right on the ground, have to drive through it but most days it goes up up and away. It dissipates fairly quickly so even that low hanging cloud is gone in say 100' or so. I know there are several more scheduled to be in operation in '07 but not sure where in IN they are going.

There is a 50M gallon plant (will expend to 100M this year) right on the edge of town here. The steam plume has certainly changed the horizon. I'll venture a guess that it raises to close to 1000' on a still day. It's out of the way of any flight paths (other than hospital helicopters), so that question has never came up.
If I can remember, I'll get a photo of it someday for you.

For what it's worth. I am sure you are familiar with Omaha's Eppley. If you go south down I-29, there are a couple of plants that emit huge steam clouds. One of these is some sort of grain processing facility, but I don't think it is an ethanol plant. The other facility is Mid-American electric generating plant, which might not be steam. Also a few plants right in Council Bluffs that give off vapor clouds. None of these seem to effect Epply's operations. Like I said, for what it's worth.

As far as steam and your airport I don't think it will be a big issue.
There is one north of me about 20 mi and I can see the steam on a cold still morning rising about 500' just guessing. The CR airport is about 2 mi south of the plant and has caused no problems.
They have more problems with hiway 30 that runs right past the plant and have to shut the hiway once and a while for the steam.
Unless its within 1/2 mi.and in your fly pattern I don't think it will effect you.

Gary,

You must be down by Iowa City or Tiffin, right? I used to live in CR (1961-'77)...the skyline has sure changed, especially on the south side of town along the Lincoln Highway.

Gary,

Are you in Iowa County? Got some good friends in Homestead. I worked for Collins (now called Rockwell Collins) from 1962 to 1996...transferred to Melbourne, Florida with them in 1977.

Stan I'm about 4 mi east of Homestead in the Iowa River valley.
Who are the friends in Homestead?
I do know many people over there.
My brother worked at Rockwell for a short period in 85.

It will be located base to final on 31 Gary. It won't effect small planes as hopefully their pattern won't be flown as wide in the smaller crafts. It will be a Cheyenne, Navajo, medium twin, base to final issue. Any way I have been asked my input to the matter and need to talk to people uninfluenced by their plants. Anyone with an axe to grind or money to be made I am afraid might be biased. Thanks for all the responses! Bill

sloroll I really dont know for sure. Right here we are about 20 mile from ADM peoria and Aventine in pekin and it depends on the weather but with just the right weather you can detect a hint of corn squeezings in the air. Most people probably dont notice. As far as the steam, well, I suppose that depends on the weather too. There are times we can see it from here but not very common. I would have no idea how high that would be. The land is flat from here but it looks pretty high but once again not that often. I have never heard of any problems with a ethanol plant in regards to these issues but maybe someone else has. I'm not sure exactly how much corn these two plants use everday but it is a huge market in central illinois. They almost always bid over the export terminals on the river and they get alot of rail corn from the west. Aventine is currently building a second plant next to the one they allready operate. There has been alot of talk about building a plant near canton but it hasnt happened yet but it is supposed to be coming soon. bill

There is one in our home town, and they're expanding it a lot this year. I've never noticed much steam out of it. At least not compared to the sugar factory it sets next too. It does put off a bit more of an odor than I would have expected.

Wow man, like we had one down here one time, and like you could get a whiff off of that baby when the wind was right ya know, and well it like made ya see little pink elifants and stuff, but wow Bill, like I don't think it really affected any of us much. Cept maybe grandma. Now she says she sees like little green men and stuff but as long as they don't eat much she says they are like okay and stuff. Cool, man, jist git-er-done. Harley
