Coming home from Indiania Saturday, my '05 Duramax started throwing a fit! I was just coming down an on ramp when it acted like somebody shut off the air. Found a Chevy dealer, but of course they wouldn't even consider looking at it until Monday. Limped it the rest of the way home, (200 mi.)running 55 mph. It just wouldn't run over 2000 RPM in any gear. Just kept acting like you shut the air off to it if the rpm got any higher. Anybody got ant ideas before it goes to Mr. Goodwrench?

It's probably a fuel or air restriction problem like the rest of the guys say, but it also could be a wiring or sensor problem, making the computer go into a protection mode that doesn't let it go any faster. Had that happen last September on an 05 Duramax. It would go to 40 MPH and no faster no matter what the engine RPM's were. It turned out some of the wiring harness was bad. We did have the 'check engine' light come on when this happened. Jim

Tell them to put a SPAC case on that part and it will be there next day.

No bull about it should be a ford or a dodge. I am trying to offer advice, am an avid Chevy fan and diesel fan so am not bashing you your truck or anything. Some problems locally (now starting to get solved)(were huge problems in 00, 01), The duramax was Gm's first major seller in the diesel world. Many dealerships up to the Duramax had never sold a diesel. Many dealerships did not have a diesel man in the shop, or had one that knew a little bit. About all they knew, about diesels, is they didnt have spark plugs and had an injection pump. Therefore , many of the new duramaxes that had slight problems or any problems wound up getting more screwed up each time they went in. My point is make sure the dealer has a diesel man and a competent diesel man. Some small town dealers I know of 2 still do not have a diesel man thats competent or certified. Most dealers ahve sent at least one guy to school by now. HOwever some of the small town gm's around here 1 dealer in particular will goof around w/it until it is roally screwed up and hten ship it somewhere else. Just my 2 cnts so you dont wind up w/a bigger problem. Shouldnt be a big deal just have to iron the wrinkles out of a new shirt.

Couple of ideas, fuel filter (always the first place to start) air filter, Mass Air Flow sensor might be dirty, its located in the air intake and use electronics parts cleaner to clean it, do not touch any of the sensor parts as you will damage it. Lastly did you have the engine service light come on? ALso go to this website and look, tons of good information on your truck!

Good luck!

A friend of mines 04 did the same thing. If you kept it around 55 it would run good but above that it acted like it was starved for fuel.It was an electrical valve problem that was fixed under warranty.

had that problem while pulling a trailer. ended up that it was just the fuel filter. should be changed every 15k miles.

Gmc just did a replacement fuel filter recall as they found most people were not changing the fuel filter at 15000. I have a 04 Duramax, best truck I've ever owned and just did the recall on fuel filter and tail gate cables. Our dealer has a very good diesel man and I personally watch that he does the work on my truck. It sure sounds like a fuel starvation problem . My dad had his electric fuel sensor replaced on 03 Duramax at 201,000 miles. Migraine
