I am working on a ford 1310 tractor with a 3 cylinder diesel engine and after replacing the injection pump it will only run in high idle. Whenever I lower the throttle it kills the engine. Is it nesissary to turn the engine to a certain cylinder at TDC to time the pump correctly? What is the general proceedure for replacing the injection pump?

Why did you replace the pump? Yes, generally to set the timing, #1 cylinder is supposed to be on the compression stroke, and X degrees advance are necessary. Some pumps require that timing marks be lined up on the gears. I'm not familiar with that one in particular. However, if the timing was off, it probably wouldn't run at all. For some reason, I'm also thinking that this tractor has the pumping elements built into the engine block? To my thinking, it's more likely you have a govenor problem, or a problem with the control rack sticking.
Sometimes, you're time and money ahead to hire somebody to deal with these things. Something to consider....

when I got to it it was actually missing. I have done similar work on other motors. I am most farmilliar with cat engines that use a pin to align the cam to the enjection pump. I am looking for information on this specific tractor.

thanks for your help.
I will try looking at what you have suggested.

The best info you will find is in the Ford service manual available from the New Holland website or your NH dealer, Sounds like the governor linkage isn't hooked up, or the governor is fubar. If the pump was missing when you got the tractor, was the mounting area covered properly? The pump is spill timed and timing is adjusted by a shim pack between the pump body and the block.

Sounds like the soldenoid (if it has one instead of a kill cable) is hooked to your throttle and the throttle cable is hooked to your cut off lever? That would be my guess. Does it have good power at high idle? Good luck
