Wait a minute before you start thinking about repairs. Yes, white smoke means water in the combustion chamber (like has been previously mentioned. However, you said the vehicle has been siting for several months. That water could be from excessive condensation in the gas tank. Add a can of water absorber and run all that gas out (as empty as you can) then fill with good fresh gas. If the white smoke stops, you've found your problem without spending a lot of money on unnecessary repairs.

Depending on where the white smoke is coming from, it could mean we have a new pope!

I think he needs the Pope to pray over this car. He just spent $1500 on it and now this.
thanks,
Jerry

Jerry it is doubtful that it is a rich fuel mixture. Normally fuel is black smoke, and white smoke is water condensing with the hot combustion temperatures and oil is more of a gray. IMHO

thanks Skipper. I was guessing it was the fuel mixture since there no water in the oil. Oil is still black. I backed off on the idea it was a fuel mixture when he told me how bad it was smoking.
thanks, Jerry

Blown head gasket or a rich fuel mixture. I was sure my Mercury had a blown head gasket (4.6 engine), lots of white smoke and I literally had water running out the exhaust when it sat an idled, but the computer needed to be reset, mileage immediately went from 15-16 to 28 on the highway.

Rich fuel mixture was what I first told him but he said it was smoking really bad so i figured that wasn't the problem. Recently had the head redone so maybe the head gasket was no good. thanks, Jerry

Allan, it is a Mit. Eclipse. He just had the head redone but it wasn't smoking when he got it out of the shop but now it is. I think Old is right and the head gasket was defective that was put on recently.
thanks, Jerry

Jerry,

Tell him to stand behind it while its running. Should be able to smell the anti-freeze if that is what it is.

Very distinctive "sweeet" smell.

Allan

Most of the time white smoke is water/antifreeze getting in to the cylinders. He may have a cracked head and or a bad head gasket. Has he at any time over heated the engine?? If so with the newer engines he probably cracked the head if/when he did.

Sounds like it was put on right and or turqued down the right way. Or the head might be warped even.
