My brother is looking at purchasing one of these tractors. It has been gone through, motor, TA, brand new paint and brand new radial tires. Nothing was not either checked or replaced. Looks like new and runs like new. Questions I have are, are these a dependable tractor? Any quirks? To be used for running a 9ft haybine, v-rake, 336 JD square baler with thrower. Will it do well with these machines?
Now price. $10,000 and not one cent less. I thought it sounded a little high for an IH, Deeres seem to be higher in resale price, but I don't know the cost of redoing an IH tractor. Please let me know what you think is a fair price for this tractor.
Thanks

There"s a 686 german diesel for sale near me in ohio for $4000 with a narrow front.A local jockey bought it from a retiring farmer.

Thanks Allan,
This one is a 312 then. I know it had the long oil cooler on the side, and filters on the opposite. Boy, your 686 is a beauty as well. Much more of these good looking reds, and I may stick one in the shed with the Green and Orange tractors!

M Nut,

Awfully high if it is a gasser, 'cause they are really thirsty. Just right if it is a thoughly gone thru diesel; maybe even a little cheap.

They are a tried and true tractor; basically the same as the prior 656, 666 models.

If it is a genuine "restored" 686D, I'd buy 'er in a heartbeat at $10K; especially if it has the 310 German engine. Wouldn't even blink.

It will do all you want it to and more.

Allan

M Nut,

On the right front side of the engine, if it is an American 312, it will have an long oil cooler laying horizontal and the oil filters will be over on the left side of the engine.

If it is a German 310 engine, it will have the oil filter lying horizontal on the right side.

However, there is not a thing wrong with the 312; one heck of an engine. I'm just spoiled with this 310.

Here's a picture on my 686 German.
