8N Won't Run

Bought an 8n that hadn't started for 2 years, after it had a carburator kit put in. Found the needle valve spring in upside down, thought it was fixed, it wasn't. It will start and run with a leakage tester plugged in where the coil wire goes into the distributor, this throws a continuous spark which fires as the rotor turns, and bypasses the ignition system. Replaced the condenser, and tractor started and ran on it's own for several times one afternoon, then died and is back like it was. Getting gas, spark looks good, timing and compression are good, tried distributor cap and points, nothing helps. Haven't tried plugs and wires yet, but guess I will, but seems like they should be good, since it will run on leakage tester. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

a bad condenser in the distributor can drive you crazy. try replacing that.

Gary, Is it a front mount distributor or a side mount? Did you put anything in the cylinders to make sure the rings werent froze up? Have you pulled the plugs to see if they are fouled? Check these things out and let us know.

It's a side mount, cylinders are good, plugs look good, can't see any reason it won't run. Only thing I can think of is that the leakage tester puts out a hotter spark than the coil maybe. Spark from coil looks hot enough when you put the plug against the block, it's blue. Tried another new condenser and rotor/ distributor, still won't run, except when it's hooked to leakage tester.

Gary, There are 3 fuel filters, one in the tank above the fuel valve, one in the fuel bowl above the gasket and one in the carb where the fuel line goes into it. Check all of them then open the drain to the carb to make sure you have a good flow of gasoline. Catch it in a can and let about a 1/2 pint go through to clean out anything that might be in there. You might give it a shot of starting fluid to see if it will start. Have you checked or cleaned out the air filter system? It sounds more like a gas related problem and would check that next. HTH
