I guess I must be living under a rock. A trucker freind told me that he has been running on Bio Diesel for about a year and is very happy with it. I decided to put some in my 99 Ford today and after I did I was wondering if there was anything wrong with Bio Diesel. For example I probally wont butn this tank of fuel in the next 4 or 5 months due to winter. I hope it will keep for that long? Any views? I all for supporting the farmer and keeping money out of other hands.

Thanks guys for the advice and the kind words regaurding my truck. I sure dont understand the diesel prices either especially when it is suppose to be so much cheaper to make. You would think that lowering fuel prices would help the economy due to lowering goods transportation cost.

Hi Chances,

Boy I gotta agree, what a nice looking ride :)

From the other forums, no one seams to be having any problems with B100 in there PSD's. There was one report of injectors being torn up after one bad tank full but I think they pretty well attributed that to bad fuel, very acidic.

The VW guys are reporting no problems with commerical made B100 from sitting upto 6mths before using. About the only drawback is the high gell temperature of B100, about 35º, so a adding anti-gell additive is a must in cold country.

About the only problem I have with using B100 is the cost as here it's still running $.30gal premium to the cost of #2.

Another pet peive is whay did B100 raise in price with the cost of dino? The price of grain didn't change, nor the price of transprotation, nor the cost of refining, so why then did B100 raise too $3.50gal from $1.75gal when dino fuel raised? Cause they can and there's nothing we can do about it!

I've been using biodiesel for 2 years now. A lot of people have been using 25% with no problems yet.... I say yet because just because there has been no problems doesn't mean there won't be.

ALL major OEMS recommend no more than 5% blend. It eats rubber components and is a good paint stripper.

A 5% blend will raise the gel point by about 2 degrees Farenheit and cut mileage and power by about 1%. Otherwise there is no noticable difference.

For a good resource, check out biodiesel.org and click on the fuel facts - lots of research there.

dido the gels quicker, add power service and it being a very very effective solvent. infact the big problem and really the only problem at all is that bio diesel is s uch a good solvent it likes to eat rubber lines. other then that its a great product. infact i had a new 595 john deere lawnmower jsut this year decided to eat itself so to speak. ate all the seals in the transfer tank etc . took it back to deere for warrenty denied the warrenty claim becasue mother deere only endorses the 5% or less mix and i admitted to running 20% (yes i have been running 20% for awhile). it cost me about 250 bucks all said and done but well worth it not to send money to the middle east. got to do something to try to kick these markets in gear. thoough i supposed eventaully , someday oil will be like beans if we really go to ethanol (corn) and bio diesel , we will get enough of a demand start importing from brazil etc and it will turn into the oil deal money going to regimes.

You shouldn't have any problems at all. The local gas stations and the farm co-op's here in central IL have been selling it for a couple of years. There is about 2 million diesel pickups running around here and no one that I have talked to has had a problem. I also have a friend that works for Schied Diesel here in Effingham IL that has not had any problems with his pickup. His Dodge is twin turbo'd and is putting about 500 ponies to the ground. It is really tweeked and he has no problem at all and didn't make any major changes to make it that way eather.

What % did you get? Minnesota has started requiring 2% soy oil in all diesel fuel. Not much, but it's the start, will go up to 5% and beyond over time.'

You likely won't have any problems with 25% or less bio. However:

It does gel sooner than #2. So, you need a blend, or Power Service in cold weather.

It does like to clean out the gunk in you tanks, so have a filter around, plan on changing it.
