I"m looking at getting a bigger tractor (120hp) that has a 1000 rpm pto. I currently have a Bush Hog brand 7 foot (model 287) medium duty cutter behiond a 4020. Bush hog is rated up to 120 hp. Is there any way to convert or adapt my bush hog to a 1000 rpm shaft? Do I need a whole new gearbox and shaft for the bush hog? Any idea what this would cost? My bush hog is fairly new - year old and used about 5 hours. I"d hate to trade it in and loose a bunch of money.

Jody, gearbox can probably be changed to 1000 rpm but you would also have to change frt. yoke on pto shaft. This will cost some $$$$$$. Is tractor you're considering 1000 rpm pto only? What brand and model? Tx Jim

Yes its 1000 rpm only. Its a versatile 300. How much money for a gearbox and yoke (about)?

Probably about the same as you gave for the original. I don't know how much area you have but I don't know why you want to use a 7' unit behind a tractor that big anyway.
I personally think you'd be better off going back to the dealer you purchased the original from and beg for mercy. The cost of conversion will go a long ways toward a 10' unit with 1000 rpm and then you'll have it right. Good luck which ever way you go....

One option would be to either put an adapter on the shaft you have to take it from 1000 to 540, or put a 1000 yoke end on the shaft you have and only run the tractor at about 1/2 PTO speed. I'd think you'd burn alot of fuel with that large of a tractor on that size of cutter at full RPM

I guess the best thing to do is sell the 7 footer and gor for a 9 or 10 foot. The 7 is a bit samll even now. Thanks for the replies.
