My daughters have asked for a BB/pellet gun this year for Christmas. I don't want to get the standby Daisy spring action BB gun. I think I want a gun that can shoot both BBs and pellets. I think I want one that you pump up with air vs. one that takes a CO2 cylinder. I want one that has open sites for sure, but maybe comes with a scope (I want to teach them how to use open sites before they move onto a scope). I don't think I want to spend more than $100.

What do you have for suggestions for me?

I bought two CZ .22's a while back. One with a Leupold scope with night sight for me. The other is a scout model for my grandchildren. We shoot shorts at paper targets in the back yard. (closest neighbor is 3+ miles in the direction we shoot) Great fun and approaches real rifle shooting except no kick. Well built rifles. Very accurate at 100yds with LR's. Good for varmit shooting. As a matter of fact, Thurlow passed on a recipe for groundhog. Has anyone tried it?

Since I am Hunter Ed instructor first thing my boys got was Hunter Ed certified. They now help me with classes (setup and all). I would recommend this being one of the requirements of owning their own gun + the Mrs. will be more at ease. You can tell them 50% of my classes are filled with girls now days.

For there 1st gun I got my boys the Daisy spring action rifle (age 9) then the Daisy 880 (age 12). They love the 880s. At 14 they each got their own .22 and this past Christmas they got used .50 cal T/C Hawken replicas.

I am looking for me a nice air gun for Christmas and focusing on RWS and Gamo. Beeman guns look to "clubby" for my taste.

Christmas for them this yr. is bows they can hunt with.

Good luck and have safe fun! Glad to hear the shooting traditions continue to be passed down.

Jay,
I can only tell you what I liked. I have a Daisy 880 that they"ve made for many years. I got it when I was probably about 10 or 12 and shot the heck out of it until I was probably 14 or 15 when I got a .22. I hadn"t really even looked at it until I got back from college 5 years ago and thought I"d dust it off. (It was up in the loft of the shed where I"d left it years earlier with dust all over it.) Anyway, put a pellet in it and gave it a few pumps and it shot as well as it did 10 years earlier. I still use it now to shoot mice in the shop.
IMHO, I would start them out w/ an air rifle over a .22, even with shorts, b/c 1. the ammo is a heck of a lot cheaper, (shoots pellets or bb"s), 2. the gun itself is cheaper, 3. it"s powerful enough to kill any small bird/rodent, or just plink at targets, also you can control how much power it has by the number of pumps. 4. They"re a LOT quieter than a .22, the Mrs. will appreciate that! I will agree that the plastic stock isn"t pretty to look at, but it holds up very well. It even has rails for a cheap air rifle scope.
Just my 2 cents worth. Here"s a link.

Jay,
I bought a demo RWS airrifle from Airgun Express several years ago. Check out the link in a previous post. They were very helpful and have quite a selection of brands, sizes, calibers, etc. The actually sell hollow point pellets!

The one I got is a model 48, adult air rifle, .22 cal, 900 feet per second if I'm not mistaken. Its a little too big for your girls, at around 8 pounds.

Also, my dad has an old .22 cal Benjamin from the early '70s. 10 pumps would kill a pigeon with a well placed shot in the head. I think that would be a good choice for its size and price.

Good Luck!

The timing of this message is perfect. I just watched the movie "A Christmas Story" over the weekend. Can still hear everyone telling little Ralphie "You'll shoot your eye out."

Jay, Go a mite more and get your young ladies a pellet rifle they will have for their children to use. The Benjamin model 397 hasnt changed in many a year and parts will probably always be available. The more you pump her up the stronger she is with a limit of nine or ten pumps if I remember correctly. I think you have a choice of .177 or .20 cal but may be wrong on that. Crossman used to make a rifle that was competitive with the Benjamin but dont know if they still make it. Crossman does make a cheaper model that will pass for a pellet rifle but not a real good one.

Jay, here's a good little gun made in TN. You know this is the one they really would like! It's a little larger than the ones you're asking about.

Here is a linky to some airguns

Believe it or not, it is illegal to sell an air rifle in Fayette County, Kentucky. That having been said, I would go with the rest of the folks on here in recommending that you consider a bolt action, even single shot 22 rifle and let them shoot short rounds. I know a few gun stores in the area where you can get a nice 22 rifle used under $100 and they will have it forever. I started my boys that way and I have never regretted it.

If you decide to spend a little more, Beeman makes a fine rifle. I know I really liked the .20 caliber one I had...(before the DVM that I loaned it to decided to take it with him when he moved out of state)!

Stay away from the CO2 cylinder guns. I haven't bought one in a long time, but my son used to have a Crossman that was a gem.
I'd give serious thought to Old's suggestion of a bolt action 22 and a few boxes of shorts.
If you really want to make them smile, get a 22 and a .410 shotgun for them!

How old is she?/ If old enough you might also think about a 22 rifle and limit her to 22 shorts, not much differant then a good pullet gun and will last her, her life time. I still have my first 22 and got it when I was around 10 years old. Old sears 22 bolt action repeater, been a good gun and still shots as good as it did when new. I just can't shot as well any more LOL.

There is a pair of them old, they are 12.

If they were boys, they would have had BB guns 5 years ago and would have gotten .22s last year. However, it has been a struggle a little with Mom, so I agreed to wait until they asked. They asked this year. If they like it, they will get other guns, as my dad did for me.

They can do hunters ed now, so I'm hoping they do. Even if they never hunt, it teaches them how to safely handle a weapon, how to treat others and their property with respect and how to be responsible. BTW - I think we've done a good job on that already. I welcome my opportunity to teach them safe and responsible weapon useage.

Biggest reason they get many of mine is because its just about the only place to go in my town. Also with a pump gun limit the number of pumps that are used and it will last longer.

I always liked the Crosman 760, had one as a child and bought one for my son. The original one lasted though thousands of rounds of BBs and finally quit when I went to college (seals dried up while hanging?). Wasn't a sparrow safe within 50 yards of that gun.

Can"t go wrong with a Daisy 880. Comes with a 4x15 scope for like $45. Shot a LOT of pigeons and sparrows with one as a kid. Think Crossman makes a good one too, but I"m not sure of the model number. The 880 has a long pump handle so a young(er) child can pump it up easy.

Crossman makes Benjamin now. My girls are 12, so they won't have any problem pumping it. I've been waiting for them to ask for a few years now. I think that is the one I'm looking for - ty.

Shoot. I got shut in the basement that would make an NRA member blush with embarasment, but it's mine, and I earned the right to use them, and like I told that nitwit kid driving around in my hayfield last year trying to spot deer, "I ain't afraid to go BACK to jail, now git!" He got. Seems the word around the neighborhood is that this old 57 yr old pony tailed harley riding hippie is about two bubbles off plumb, and you know what? I just love it. The rifraf leave me alone. Teach em right, teach em safety, teach em respect and we'll have two more to watch our backs when we need'm, Harley
