Hello,

OK be honest on this one. Favorite brand and sentimental feelings aside, what do you think was the best LOOKING tractor ever made? If you were born on the moon and saw all the tractors from the 40's through the 70's for the first time today, what would you say is the best looking and why.

Mark

Ones that are actually used. Modified to fit the jobs or not, clean or dirty, rusty or shiny. To me, thems the best looking ones, if they work.

Since it's what I know I'm gonna go outside the farming industry and say any cable crane ever made. My favorites are any of those set up with an attachment for other than simply lifting. I don't care what color they are or even if their rusted all to heck, if their being used to dragline, as a front shovel, pull shovel or whatever their just plain poetry in motion to watch.

To be honest there are many tractors in all colors that I like because each have their own quailities, I like the JD 4020 ,IHC 1066 ,AC D21. MF Super 90, Ford 7700 . But the one I likes the best is the 861 Ford with the Elenco 4x4. But that is the one I own

I have installed them on a '76 with a 390, so I can tell you that it would be best to have a buddy lending a hand. You need to be under the truck and up on top at the same time. You will also want the thick, heavy duty gaskets, and don't even start until you have the special header bolts, which should be included, but mine weren't. Another thing, the bolts that are holding the manifolds on now can be a real PITA to get out. Start soaking them now with your favorite brand of snake oil, and having a hot wrench handy might also be a good idea.

That's like asking, "Who is the prettiest girl"? Ask a hundred guys and you'll get 100 different answers.

However, the 966 open station has always been my favorite. A bulldog in an iron incarnate. :>)

I"m biased, since I don"t have use for any of the bigger machines, but the Allis B always was my favorite for classic tractor styling. I also really like the looks of the old Silver King tractors.

When I wanted to get into old tractors I shopped them like you would a car. Went to a local old tractor dealer and looked at all he had. The Olivers...don't know much about them but the "77" I think is a good example...are probably the most cosmetically beautiful tractors with all that sheet metal and shiny paint but I don't think that I would want to marry one. For overall beauty, inside and out, the kind that lasts a lifetime, I would go Farmall M and, if you want to be very specific, the SMTA.

I don't disagree with anything that has been posted here (especially the part about "too hard to decide" given all the great tractors out there). I'll put in a plug for the "mini" versions, e.g. the Farmall A and B, the Massey Harris Pony, Allis B & C, etc. Just fun to look at these little guys and see some of the same engineering and practical utility that went with their "big brothers." Especially fun if you remember from your perspective as a kid.

Personally the best looking tractors to me are the hundred series Olivers. We never had one until about a year ago as we use JD"s but I have always loved the way they look. Second would be probably the 10-20 series JD"s and then the Fleetline and Super Olivers. Those two would really be a toss up to me but I had to write them in some order.

Mark: Your first three respondants stole just about everyone's thunder. I mean just look at that old Case, imagine that red, yellow and green Oliver, The D series Allis, Styled Deeres and that little Ford. Only one thig you can add to that list, letter series Farmall.

Now, most practical and functional came 15 years later and 65 years later than the Case.

Hard choice to make. Personally, I can narrow it down to three favorites:

Allis D series, any of 'em
Oliver 70 with the yellow grille and red wheels
John Deere 30 series, from the 530 up.

Showin' my age, I reckon...

Starting in the 40s leaves way to many beutiful tractors out. There is romance in the old iron that was never matched in later tractors of convenience.
