Now I"m looking at a good deal on a 1991 Ford 4630 with 7000 hours on it. It seems to be a good tractor.....but I just wanted some opinions about this model from people who know them or have owned them. Are there any ususal problems with this model that I should look out for? How many hours should the engine in this model last if it is well maintained, before it needs some work? Please give me opinions on Ford 4630 tractors. Thanks!!

I have a Ford New Holland 4630 (DA5) tractor that will not start. Direct jump to starter starts the engine. Using the ignition switch I to start the tractor results in no voltage to starter. Is there a relay or other switch that prevents the voltage from getting to the starter. There is a relay above the engine but it appears to be working ok. Any advice, or trouble shooting manuals (pdf) that will help?

The key switch circuit runs from the switch, down through the transmission safety switch, then through a PTO safety switch on the PTO lever and then up into the fuse panel where it controls that relay. Check to see if you have power in the relay control circuit and the switched line of the relay.
I'd bet on a bad safety switch if I only had one guess.....

Thanks for the info. It was the transmision switch. When I by-passed the trans safety switch placing a loop-connector in-line instead of the trans switch connection, it started right up. Thanks.

P.S. I WILL replace the Tranmission Saftey switch. The loop was only a test loop.

The 30 series Fords were generally good tractors. The engines were designed for 10000 hours service.
I wouldn't say that there are any particular red herring issues to watch for on the 4630, however, at 7000 hours, I would recomend that you give it a damn good hard look over. That's just getting to that stage where anything could be wrong. Check the hydraulics, the transmission synchronizers if it's the 8x8, the front axle....especially if it's been a loader tractor. You could find just about anything. I have a 3930 that's seen a lot of repairs over the years, but it's seen a lot of punishment too. Just look carefully. At 7000 hours, I doubt it's a cream puff.....

I have a 1995 model with about 2500 hours on its. Also have a loader on it. The "95 has a turbo while yours will not. Good tractor with a simple design. Could shift smoother, but has good power and is dependable. Pull a 10 foot mower, disc mower, and a small round baler with it. Not the easiest thing on fuel though. But they are a good heavy tractor. I don"t remember but 1991 mayhave been the first year for the 30 series before that it would have been a 4610. hope this helps.

Are you sure about the year? Ford was out of the tractor mfg business before 1991?

The Ford name is on the side of blue tractors through 1999. Even some Fiat-based new hollands have Ford on the side.
