I live in Canada and I am constantly seeing great deals on machines in the U.S. I am hesitant to really look any further because I think that duties, taxes, shipping ect. will eat up any of the good deal.

Right now I am looking at a 12000lbs track loader in MA and would like to ship it to the Toronto area. Can anyone help me with regards to what expenses I can expect?

Thanks/Doug

Hey Doug: You better be sure before you buy. I ordered a manual for a Wisconsin engine and it ended up costing me $21.00 to ship when you can ship to Detroit for $3.00. Plus when the mail man delivered it he had his hand out for $14.00 for Goooood old G.S.T.

The manual ended up costing way too much.

At one of the Steam Engine shows this summer I could have saved about half.

Be sure. Have a good one.

There is no duty on anything coming into Canada as long as it was made in Canada, USA or Mexico. You will have GST to pay (unless it is an exempt item) on entry, but you'll have that even if you buy locally. Transportation will be your biggest concern in keeping it a good deal.

For farm equipment there are no duties, only small registration fee. If this cannot qualify as farm equipment it maybe another matter. You will have to pay GST so if you get a really good deal make sure you have a bill of sale indicating what you paid otherwise Revenue Canada will set the value based on their opinion. All dealers along the border (on both sides) from Vancouver to N.S. will handle these things for you. They do it every day.
Transportation is another matter and you need to contact a Canadian carrier that may have an empty truck returning from that area if you are without time constraints. If you buy from a dealer he will know all this.
I have purchased numerous items of farm eqp. from Canadian dealers and have never (not once) had a problem. As a Canadian you'll have to deal with the border authorities on that side but if you call them they will lay it all out for you. Good luck whatever you decide.

Doug: Don't know exactly where your 12,000 lb. track loader would fit in. Farm Equipment moves both ways duty free. They may class the loader as construction equipment, that may make a difference on duty. The one exception being GST on items not GST exempt. Canadian Customs will want GST at border on those items.

My experience has been mainly with small items like farm equipment parts. On those courier companies will often want more than item is worth, just for brokerage fees of clearing it through customs. With same items in back of my pickup, quite often I drive up to Canada Customs, tell them what I have. Sometimes they want to see invoice, most often not. On items under $300., I've yet to have them do a GST process, just not worth their paper work or time. They tell me to have a nice day and send me on my way.
