I would like to know the pros and cons of upgrading from an IH 1456 to 1066 or 1466. Which one had the better engine, rearend, etc.? Is it better to run the TA forward or back when pulling heavy loads?

The only thing you would gain is starting ability in colder weather usualy 66 will start better.A 56 will run right with a 1066 under 130hp.When it comes to a overhaul the 66 will be cheaper.I like the wide fronts on the 56 better than the 66 not as much mattience on pins and bushings .You can put the clutch assist on the 56 off a 66.

Don't be afraid of the 400 series engine. If the tractor has a water filter assembly, its just a matter of changing the filter and a little additive now and then. The 1066 has a turbo charged 414 CID engine, while the 1466 has a 436 turbo charged engine, (same block, different crank, pistons, and head). The 10 and 14 have the same transmision and rearend. I used to turn wrenchs for IH Dealership, and there are a lot of 400 series engines out there with 10,000+ hours on them that have only had the rod and main bearings changed out in the 5000 to 7000 hour range.

The problems with cavitation come about when the tractor has been turned up or with improper coolant and impurities. The water filter assembly solves MOST of the cavitation issues when used with proper coollant. We had one 1466 turned up to 160hp that was run up to 15000 hours with an overhaul at 8000-9000 with no issues of that kind.

A more knowledgeable person will correct me, but I always assumed the transmission in the 1466 was heavier then the transmission in the 1456, the standard weight on a 1466 is 2000 pounds+ more then a 1456. Neither is "weak" when used as designed. One transmission in a 1466 we owned did grenade when it was abused on a dozer blade.

The 1456 is by far the best tractor of the three. It has the longest lasting motor and quality in assembly. The gears in the 14's would be the same but the 400 series motors in the 66 series are prone to cavitation [holes in the wet sleeves] and will not last half as long as the 407 in the 1456. As for the ta to get the advantage of it run it ahead so if you hit a tough spot you can pull it back and will retain power to pull tru it without down shifting gears.
