This might be a little off the regular subject and it might be one that nobody wants to talk about either. I live about a 1 1/2 miles from a nursing home ( and my Father is there) and I take 1 of my tractors down there ever now and then and it really makes the people's day! It gives them something to look at and talk about for a few days. My Dad and me worked on Farmall A's and B's for years and I picked up the Hobby and he still remembers his own tractor when I take it out there. So if you have the time to just stop by for a little while you just might make a fellow tractor nut or farmer's day. Color really doesn't matter bring them all!!
Thanks! Shaggy ( Mark Miller)

We do something very similar here. I belong to a group of classic car fans and we visit several different nursing homes a couple of times a year to brighten the residents day! It started because one of our memebers mothers was in one of the homes, sadly she passed away at age 102 several years back but we saw the joy our old cars gave to the old folks that we have continued the tradition. Since a car has more than one seat unlike a tractor, we also take some of the folks for rides through town one at a time with the nurses assitance of course. The stories those folks can tell you while cruising in a classic car about how they had a car just like this one will really bring a smile to your face!

When my Dad was in the home, I took some scale model tractors, and books that he could have. After he was gone, I left the models and books with the home. And 5 years later, the tractors are still on display in the dining room, and the books have seen a lot of well deserved use.

PS: And it isn't only tractors that will bring a smile. I always make sure to take a couple of our Chihuahuas, and they have a regular fan club.

Aloha, Actually, they would appreciate your being there even if you didn't have a tractor or even if you didn't know them at all. Just talking to them will make them happy.

Mahalo,

I think that is the best thing you can do for your Dad. I had a mowing job next to a nursing home my Mom was in, and she was brought out to see me on my tractor. I will never forget the smile on her face.Dad didn't spend very long in a nursing home (thank God). He always enjoyed seeing me on the tractors around the place.Spend all the time with your Mom and Dad as you can. When they are gone that's it. Stan

Our local tractor club makes a once a year visit to both the assisted care facilities and to the nursing home. One man in the club makes the arrangements and schedules with different members to get all the colors in to the parking lots where the activities director ropes off an area in the parking lot. These folks line up in the lobby hours before to see and touch these old relics ( even though most of them are now restored) and it just plain makes their day. You will see residents bringing out folks that never were around tractors or farming and get to tell their story. Its a warm fuzzy for sure. So take the time to do it maybe even over the holidays to make someone's day brighter. The little bit of work and effort is repaid many times over I can tell you from experience. Migraine

You guys are doing a wonderful thing. I guess I'm lucky. At 85 years of age, my dad is still driving his tractors around the farm. We are hoping to avoid the nursing home thing, but you never know. My wife is afraid that my Dad will pass on while on one of the tractors. I always ask, so whats wrong with that?

Please read the attached link. Old Farmer was an early contributor to this fine board until he passed in 1999. He must have died smiling.

A local farmer died about the same way around here. I think he was green chopping, but he came to the end of the feild, took it out of gear and that's where he died. My grandma had the same funeral home director, he said when he went out to the feild it looked like he just sat back to look at the sunset and take in the veiw.

My grandma spent a little time in the nursing home after she broke her arm then again a few months later after she was diagnosed w/ cancer. While she was there, I visited her every other day, sometimes I'd bring one of our collies along, and all the old folks loved them, exept one cranky old farm gal who could be heard saying"dogs belong in the barn..... " under her breath.

My grandma's last few days were spent in her house w/ my brother who had already lived w/ her for 4 years. my brothers, dad, and me were doing hay the day before, and when we quit at about 10 we all went over to see her. We stayed w/ her until about 11:30, and she passed a little while later.
