I see a lot of reference to the older tractors being named, for instance, "10-20", and "12-24", and sucj like.

I am beginning to suspect that this has to do withthe rated horsepower of the unit, where the first # is the drawbar power, and the second # is the pulley power.

Am I way off base here?

Andy

You got it Andy! First number was the drawbar HP; 2nd was HP available at the belt pulley.

The Nebraska tractor tests came about in an effort to standardize tractor power ratings in response to more than a few inflated claims of tractor power ratings by unscrupulous manufacturers. For a few years in the 1920's many builders' model numbers incorporated the tractors' drawbar/belt HP ratings.

These ratings were often determined and used in model designations for steam traction engines as well.

Andy:

Tractor owners, like any other exclusive group, communicate among themselves in a way that prevents outsiders from understanding. That's the essence of all professional vocabularies, and it's no different here.

I've been an avid student of the tractor culture for the last year, and through dedicated study have figured out most of the Ferguson, Massey, MF line.

When someone drops a John Deere number in a posting, however, I feel like the village idiot gazing hopelessly at the butcher's daughter, convinced that I will never, could never, figure out a vocabulary that arcane without a lifetime of living green.

Perhaps this tradition is at the root of the fervent brand loyalties we see in discussions. It's not the tractor: guys just don't want to face a learning curve that steep in taking on a new colour.

Interesting-I have about 6 books on old tractors, and i read this forum as well as the ones at atis.net and the farmall group on yahoo and I have never seen the answer to this in any of them.

i guess it's one of these thoongs that is so obvious to those who know, that they don't think it needs explaining.

This post is interesting reading, but I went to Tractors.com and a JD 10 20 is in the mid 30s HP range. What am I missing here? Lou

1020 is not the same as 10-20.

OK I see the error in my thinking. Who made the 10-20? how old are these tractors where this system of ID works? Lou

I think the only John Deere tractor to use that system was the 15-27 (early model D). Maybe also the 10-20 (model GP).

I think that by the 1920's everybody had pretty much given up that system.
BTW, when I was a kid just getting started with tractors (early '60s) I had it in my head that IH was using a simplified version of that. I couldn't quite figure, though, why a 460 horsepower tractor was bigger than one with 504.
