I recently "inherited" a monster of a tractor, a 1939 WK-40 McCormick Deering. It does not have a starter but has an opening designed for one. Does anyone know a source for a starter and perhaps someone has some tips on installation. I also would like to hear from owners of WK-40's or W-40's...perhaps you would share some of your tips on restoration or stories or experiences with this model tractor. This WK-40 was used many years to run a sawmill and before that who knows?? What were they designed to do?? I understand only about 10,000 were made. This tractor has a six cylinder engine with the International emblem.

I saw one up here with a neat installation of a big Chrysler Hemi V8 in it. Not for show. He used it for serious work.

A neighbor of ours had one, when I was growing up in Western Kansas. It was used in One-way plowing, etc. in raising wheat and milo grain. If I remember correctly, the WK-40 ran an International truck engine through a gear reduction unit to lower the rpm to drive a tractor. I can remember the gear whine from the gear reduction unit. So you might look at truck engines of that age group for a starter.

Good luck,

Bob
