I had 2 86 Comanchees and now a 90. Replaced u-joints on all front axles, always about 90 thousand mi. Make sure you check the manual for the right way to reconnect that vacuum unit or it may not connect or break something. The bodies always gave trouble before the axles for me. Like jfp said my 86's were made by AMC and the 90 is Chrysler and lot of parts don't change, but the axles were Dana and may. No expert here, it's one tough truck for the size.

You did not say what year your commanche was? I had an 89 that I thought the rear was bad because it kept getting hot on long trips and it felt too loose when shifting from first to reverse and vise versa. I found out the problem was a bad u-joint and it was only one bad cap. Seems it throws everthing out of balance. 89 model had a Dana 3:73 ratio usually stamped on a tag that is on the outside cover plate bolted by a cover plate bolt (I hope that makes sense). I don't think a wrangler will interchange parts but depending on the year it might. Hope this helps.

As long as the width of the axle assembly matches your Jeep, and the gear ratios are the same , front and rear, then check the width between the springs, the length of the springs, the mounting of them, and, if all that matches up, you might carry it off! And, make sure the front and rear wheels and tires match! If you get different wheel or tire sizes, or different gear ratios, you'll end up with a bucking bronco--er--Jeep! Also, if your Jeep is an old model, be very careful on how large a tire you use on it!! Large tires look "smart" but they can and will make the Jeep unstable on a tight turn! I've seen some that flipped so fast, the people didn't have time to react, and used their heads for a roll bar! Speaking of roll bars--those factory installed roll bars were called "Squash Bars", by folks in the know! Have the bar reinforced on the corners if you're going to use it-- otherwise have a good one made for it! (This from an old Jeep body man, who has seen people lose their heads-literally!) Rustyj
