Just a heads up that there is a very good paypal spoof going around.

I'm embarrased to say that I actually fell for it and I am a web developer.

A good rule of thumb is to never click on a link you receive in a paypal-esque email. Always open a new browser window and type in the URL directly.

The email claims that an odd email has been added to your account and prompts you to click on a link if this new email was not added by you.

This page then goes to a pop-up which has an image of a webbrowser toolbar in it so it appears as if you really are at paypals site, but you are actually entering your user/pass which is being captured by some unsavory individual so they can use your credit card.

Paypal recommends you never respond to emails. Use a separate browser window to access paypal. They also request that you forward these scam emails to spoof@paypal.com for investigation.

I get these all the time. I put the curser on the link one time, the extension said phoenixwebgroup.com(orsomething like that).( the web address will show in the lower left hand portion of your browser) I called that company and asked to talk to the president. I got the president and informed him there site was being used for fraud. He hung up on me. I called back 2 seconds later and the phone was never answered.

I promptly called the Kansas City Police(that is where the company was from).....

I always want to reply to these things with bogus info, but I don't, I understand it just confirms your email address is legit if you do. I've started adding in my listings "there will be NO second chance offers on this item, if you get one report it to ebay"

I just got one yesterday. The best one yet. It had a properties address that was "something" (I don't remember) at paypal.com. It said that my account was access from a computer with a different IP address and as a service of paypal, I needed to verify my information - log in (not login) here. Great spoof with excellent detail.

Watch for this one!

Bill

I am not a computer expert. But I have my Outlook Express so that the messages are not opened until I double click on them. Suspicious messages I click once to highlight, then click "File", then "Properties", then "Details". Usually that will show the true address of the sender- but not absolutely always.

You can expect more of the same once they find you. If you buy big ticket items and have a positive feedback rating they will try to scam you. That crud spoils an otherwise excellent way to buy tractors and other great stuff! You aren"t the first, and won"t be the last to have it happen. It"s a good idea to forward those emails to spoof@ebay.com and paypal.com. Changing your password every so often is a good idea too. Some of the scammers are hard to spot so be vigilant if you have even the slightest suspicion about an email like that. Others are easy because the grammer is pathetic. Good Luck and be careful!

My goodness Joe, what were you thinking? Or should I say not thinking! I bet I have gotten at least 100 of those things, and have sent every one of them to spoof@paypal.com and finally they have stopped. No idea how or why they end up with my Email address, but I have learned never to click on any link without checking where it's headed first. I just run the mouse over the link, and a little box pops up and shows the real address and it's almost certain it will be going somewhere besides Pay Pal. Seems like most had a Yahoo address in them, so I would forward the Email to abuse@yahoo.com too. Only takes a second to forward them, and you might be saving someone who doesn't know better.
And how about ebay? Get any scams from them too? I have, they want your ID and password so they can list stuff on your account, like tractors and you won't be any the wiser. You just have to keep your eyes open and pay close attention to what your doing. Stay safe!

I too have seen some very good spoofs. The key is how it is addressed. If it is really from eBay or PayPal it will use your actual name instead of a generic "PayPal User" greeting.

Dan, Good point if they don`t show your true name then they are not official. Thanks for the heads up.

Don't believe it. I have received 5-6 "second chance offers" from E-Bay scammers over the past couple of weeks with my E-Bay name,my highest bid, etc. The only way I caught it was the scammers wanted to be contacted directly to their e-mail,not the contact address of the real seller.
