I don't want to come across as smart-allickly but I don't understand a post that reads: I just bought this. What is it? Does it give problems? Can I get parts? How much power does it have? Did I pay too much? Ect. Ect.
Ain't it a little late for that after the purchase?

You think that is crazy, I run a lawn mower shop, I have people call at least 2-3 times a week and ask me over the phone "my lawn mower does not start, can you give me an estimate on how much it will cost ot fix it???" Upon quizzing about symptoms and such, they have no clue as to what kind of mower it is, what it is doing, if it ran, then died or what, it just don't start.....

My hat is off to you. That has to be one of the most demanding public relations jobs in the world. Always being one to get into things to make a little pocket money I attempted to do lawn mower repair. fixin them was easy. Keepin them customers from killin you was another thing. Ain't a madder person in the world than one who has to mow the lawn on a 90 degree day and the mower won't start because they didn't put gas in it.

I'm still smarting from paying $111.64 to change a fuse on the van. And I'm a licensed Industrial Electrician. It's along story but I should not have assumed anything.

The guy that gets me is the guy who either buys a tractor or is looking at a tractor and posts a three word discription here and then asks, "whats its worth", and then expects an honest definitive, comprehensive answer. Yeah, right.

Hey there Illinois..... Those 4 aces are as good as gold as long as they werent dealt from the bottom of the deck or from up your sleeve. Wait a minute, I have 3 Aces myself.....Might that deck have had 7 or more aces? You must have grabbed the Pinochle deck, but then what am I doing with a deuce.

I think sometimes people get to remembering things. Like when they were 7 and went to stay with Grandma and Grandpa on the farm for a week. Grandpa had that Alice Chambers tractor in the barn and they saw him drive it and thought it was cool. Now they"ve got 3/4 of a acre and some disposable money, and want to be just like Grandpa. So they see something orange for sale and think it"s just like the one they remember from 35 years ago. What they buy is a memory. Sometimes a memory is priceless and sometimes it"s a nightmare.

I've often wondered the same thing. There have even been posts where the new owner doesn't have a clue as to what make it is, much less what model. You've got to wonder if some of these people were born stupid, or if it was learned behaviour. Makes for entertaining reading though.

Even funnier yet, I had a guy call about a year ago and want a stainless stack for his John Deere G tractor, I gave him a price to which he stated "are you crazy!" I can buy a chrome one 20 bucks cheaper! I said suit yourself. A week ago he called again about a stainless stack, I gave him the price and he had a fit because the price was 5 bucks higher than last year, (my cost of everything has gone up). Then to top everything, he wanted to trade his chrome stack for a stainless stack! I quizzed him a little and found out the chrome plating on his stack was starting to crack and peel at the weld zone on the base.
I suggested he sell his stack to someone, and I would sell him a stainless stack for the stated price. needless to say he was very unhappy. I haven't heard from him since. I must have blown that sale!

You have to learn that being honest and telling the truth will offend some people.

As a mechanic I know exactly what you mean. I often see people go out and buy a machine they know nothing about. Often they get what would be a good deal on the machine, if it were in good shape, but since they didn't know what to look for beforehand they don't get such a good deal. The kicker comes when they find out what all needs to be repaired and how much it's gonna cost. It's not uncommon to hear the reply that "That's more then I paid for the machine". What they don't understand is for just about every machine the sum of the parts is several times the sum of the whole machine, and then you've got labor on top of that. Then they have to decide do they want to invest more in the pile of junk they just bought to at least make it usable (even though it'll still be junk), or can they sell it to some other unknowing sucker at a loss and get part of their money back. Believe it or not they often decide to fix it. I guess they don't want to admit to themselves that they really screwed up and to sell it would be doing just that. Like you say it makes no sense at all but I see it happening more and more every day as people who didn't grow up around equipment start looking for "play toys". Personally I commend them for wanting "toys" like this, but it's better to spend a little bit to have a local mechanic that can be trusted or a friend that knows the machines to check things out and give an opinion first. It'll save alot of heartache, not to mention money, later....Just my .02

I see guys bragging about the bargain or great deal they found that was "just overhauled" or "restored",then a week later they want to know
why smoke is coming out the valve cover vent or
why it won't move in a certain gear.I've lost the sale of a good tractor because some yuppie liked shinny paint or believed the BS of some
jocky. Then a few weeks later they want me to bail them out or take there junk on trade.

Can be but sometime people find something they have never seen and buy it just because of that. Almost like what I'm doing now, have an Allis WC speed patrol that I'm doing a fast clean up/ paint job on because a number of club members have never seen one and since I own one I plan on showing it this year. Just hope I can get it painted and all before the 23rd of this month

I bought a book on collectable tractors and it has a WC motor patrol in it. Fine piece I must say. I grew up on WD, a JD A, IH M, H,CUB,FORD JUBILEE. We could not keep THE A running as it always broke down, just a bad lemon. The WD would out run the A in the field on breaking ground. Besides growing up on them I've owned 2 big M's. I like them but the WD was easier for me to handle as a kid. When I went to school spring break was breaking ground and then we got another week in the fall for fall harvest. Yeah, I know what to look for in an old tractor, not sure about the new ones though. LOL
