Out mowing a field and the JD just died. No sputter, just died. Went out a couple hours later and it fired right up, mowed for about 50 yards and died again. Wouldn't start back up. Checked the fuel filter and seems to be clean. Any suggestions?

Dug, I think it is not getting fuel. pull the fuel line off the carb, turn on the gas and see if the gas will flow strong for 15-20 seconds into a gas can.

Does it still have spark when it quits. Is the coil getting hot. Could be a bad coil or condenser

If your getting spark, is the carb getting enough gas. Pull the drain plug on the carb and see if it flows a stream maybe the size of a pencil lead.

When it quits does it sputter and die or just cut right off?

Someting else to look at if it has a rubber gas line is to make sure it is not kinked or twisted. I had a H do that and didn't notice it until we had almost run the battery down. Make sure the fuel lines or opening at the tank are not stopped up either. Sometimes they will let just enough get though for the tractor to start and run a short time but not enough to keep it running.
