Neighbor came by the shop this afternoon and had his waterpump and fan assy with him. Couldn't get the fan and thermo clutch off.

I thought I was real cute so I got out my Ford 6.9-7.3L Diesel book to tell me how to do it....yeah right. In in there it said that the fan clutch had Left Hand threads. That means CW removes it. Okay. Also said I needed a special Ford wrench to hold the fan belt pulley while you torqued on the nut that was part of the fan shaft.

Well a quick design and a little cutting and welding and we had the magic special wrench.

Away we go.....well, not quite.

After a reasonable amount of banging on the end of a 1 7/8 wrench (about 2'long) I asked him for the replacement.

Close observation of the threads on the shaft indicated that they were not LH as th Chilton (I think) manual said, but RH.

So back we went and some more banging (ccw this time) with my 15" sledge and whammo she broke loose.

So if you are in the market to change out your water pump, might file this away.

Mark

You mentioned the type of tools used to remove the fan on the powerstroke, we have about 30 of the powerstroke trucks. Best tool to remove the fan assb. is a dull air chisel in the middle of the nut flats. Works every time, try it on a bad one coming off for a test, nothing lost. Reinstall the same way, we never had a problem with this method.

6.9L and 7.3L are left hand thread but the T444E/ powerstroke is right hand threads. David

Well sir, this guy told me his was a 7.3 and I assure you it was RH. Now I didn't investigate the truth or lack thereof as to his engine type, but he is no dummy and ought to know what he bought.

Additionally, the pics in the manual matched what we were working on. Besides the new pump he bought from AutoZone was for a 7.3 and it matched the one we removed and it too had RH threads. Looking at the shaft of the new one is where we figured out that the book was wrong.

For reference you are dealing with two entirely different critters pre 94 6.9 and 7.3 are inderict injected NON powerstroke engine the 94 or 94 1/2 up are a direct injected computer controlled engine and are totally new desine even though it is 7.3 liter that is about the only thing the same . mike j
