Frankie - I am no expert but my dad bought a new Suburban in 2000 and another one in 2004. If you don't get the proper oil filter for these with a drain back checkvalve, the oil drains back and it is not pumping oil for a few seconds. My dad's (both of them) clattered on every startup. Jiffylube uses a standard filter. Should have used the recommended filter. Sorry, I don't have the AC Delco or Goodwrench or what ever number, but I would check it out before I spent too much money having someone diagnos it. That is how he fixed his. It was a V8 but I think the filters are the same. Hope this helps. J

I had 4.3 GMC Jimmy, same engine. Kept it 12 years without ever a knock or problems. Sold it to a neighbor, to whom I had explained in detail to use only Mobil One and to change it every 3000 miles. He came by the house one day to complain that it had developed a knocking until warmed up. He had switched to regular oil. Sure enough, when he switched back to the Mobil One, all knocking was stopped. I am told that without synthetic oil some of the 4.3 engines will have "piston slap" until warmed up.

Don't forget to check the flexplate if it's an automatic. They fracture around the flywheel bolts.

I drive a '96 S10 PU to work every day. It has 170K on it and uses almost no oil between changes. The key to engine life is a strict maintance schedual. Oil changed every 3K miles, religously. This is my 2nd 4.3. The 1st went to over 150k. The guy who drives it now says it will make 250K. Don't know the problem with your mother's, but I would get it to a reputable mechanic yesterday. Good Luck.

Got two of 'em nearing the 100,000 mile mark - run and sound like new. No problems. When do you hear the sound? On startup, idling, in drive - holding the brake? Might be a good idea to have a professional listen to it. Isn't that still under warranty?

Frankie,

What you are hearing is piston slap due to the shortened pistons skirts in those engines.

GM is gonna tell you it is normal; it isn't, but that is what they'll say to keep from having to deal with it.

When the engine is being built, there are both high and low tolerances for the cylinder bore and also the same for the piston.

If by chance an engine should happen to get by on the high side bore-tolerance and a low side piston-diameter, it will still pass spec, but when it's cold it is gonna talk for the first minute or so after starting cold until that piston sweals from heat.

This is how the GM schools explained it to me anyways.

Allan
