What does MFWD stand for? I know it has to do with front/four wheel drive but what is the M for?

Thanks

That abbreviation would be FWA (Front Wheel Assist)for hyd type. Good to know if your looking at buying tractors.

M for mechanical? Wouldn't that be redundant? Is there some other kind of front/four wheel drive?

There were hydraulic systems (HFWD) as well as mechanical. Deere mostly used them prior to the 50 series, in which the vaunted Caster-Action MFWD was introduced. The hydraulic FWD in the pre-50 series Deere tractors was not too successful, it had reliability issues and was not the best for pulling power, certainly not for tillage. However, some combines still use HFWD for traction assist in getting thru a wet spot.
