Anyone have any tips on replacing an old culvert in my driveway? Ive never put one in before.I need to make the existing one bigger.I have some free used galviized pipe,or would it be better to use new plastic? Go with a bigger pipe or maybey 2 pipes side by side? Do I fill with dirt or bankrun? I would like to have crusher run on top.Theres about 1-2 ft of standing water in there now will that be a problem or do I have to find a way to run that off.
Thanks Stan

I have only put in two culverts in my life so my advice is worht exactly that. I would go with one bigger one. The company that I got mine from saidthat plastic was for ever but needed a deeper cover than galvanized. The town provided me with crushed shale to fill with for free. I could have used bank run but the they would have required a bell on the head end of it.

In MN we have an 800 number to call (Gopher One Call?) a day ahead to get all utility lines located.

You need to be sure you are not going to run afoul of the county or state road departments because you didn't get a permit before you start digging or anything. They sometimes get mighty rude!!

Here in SC, the county will install one per residence, unless things have changed. Not sure about other states. If there is a drainage problem, you might get the highway dept. or county to do it.

Unless you plan on selling in 5-10 years, go for the corrugated plastic and never have to do it again. As stated, check with the government entity responsible for the road if the pipe is in their ROW.

If this is on the right-of-way (easement) of the public roads system, they may specify a minimum size. Be sure to comply with that regulation. In NC it is now 15" ID, used to be 12". Two smaller ones are much more likely to clog. My son works for Hancor, so I suggest their lined corrugated pipe. Comes in 20' lengths.
