I just bought a 47 8n and I am wondering what a certain knob does for me. Below the choke there"s a large "knob", I think it is for some type of add-on gearing control, does this sound right or am I crazy? Any help is appreciated...By the way it seems like the knob is rusted/stuck in. Thanks, Tom

If you do end up needing a cable, maybe these people have one:

First off, welcome to the "world of N ownership".
Secondly, you'll probably get more help over on the 9N, 2N & 8N board (on this site).
Finally, in answer to your question:
Sounds like a Sherman Overdrive auxillary transmission (cable operated). The cable operated transmissions were not as common as the lever operated ones... for the reason that you're now experiencing... the cable rusts and freezes up. From all the I've heard (OK, read) you need to be VERY careful trying to free that cable up as they are NOT availble (even aftermarket) anymore, outside of having on 'custom' fabricated.

Check out John Smith's Ford Tractor resource for further details...
