Sometimes it looses an connection or something. I have replaced the ign module, and condensor. It has an electrionoic iginition with no points. It gets reall fustrating that it starts 20 times adn then it wont start.Snybody has anyyyy sugestions?????

My 98 GMC K2500 had a weird problem where it would suddenly die and then not restart. Turned out it was the wiring harness and contact points from the ignition key to the firewall. Dealer replaced it and it works like a charm now.

Hey,Dan;I'll go with what Allan is telling you on that pick-up coil and the switch. Had a datsun truck way back that drove me nuts for a while with the same problem. It was the ignition switch.Remember, throwing money at it is a mistake, slow down and think about the symptoms and narrow down the possibilities. My .02 worth.Kenny

Could be a coil. Had an S-10 of the same vintage that started doing the same thing. I let the guy at the parts store guide me on what he sold the most of and started replacing parts in that order. His opinion was "no way it"s a coil". After being stranded in an airport parking lot at midnight and having to get a cab home I had the truck towed to the GM dealer who charged me for a new coil and the problem went away.

No one can tell you anything. Having said that, I assume that you have isolated it to spark and not fuel. That being the case, when was the last time you changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor? If you haven"t...it"s time to do that.

Now..next time it doesn"t start....see if it"s humid outside or raining...if so...get a can of WD 40 and spray the wires, and distributor cap. If humidity is shorting out the spark, this will tell you that.

Incidentally, you gave very little information like: does it attempt to fire, does do nothing not even turn over etc.....also clean your battery terminals and make sure your battery is up to snuff.

don't use WD-40 on ignition wires or anywhere around the dist cap. it will actually insulate the wires and prevent it from starting. i use a product called SPRAY DRI. available at NAPA or most any auto parts supply. it dries moisture without insulating the electrical system.

I have used WD40 to dry wires etc ,, But ,,,be aware the if you have arching wire you might get a surprise fire !!!!

Dan,

Check that pickup coil down in the distributor. That little thing will drive ya crazy if it has an intermittent open at the leads.

Also, you might wanna look at the ignition switch.

Allan

The truck turns over well with a good battery. It wont get spark b/c i turn it over and check the plugs for spark and get none. Going to get new plugs and wires.

Dan,

Stop and think about this.

If the truck starts and runs fine for 20 starts and then suddenly it just absolutely refuses to start because it has no fire in any way, shape or form, I'd think plugs and wires certainly aren't your problem.

I'd be for looking back upstream.

Ignition switch or pickup coil. Ignition modules are a 'go-no go' thing, so you can rule that item out (they don't go bad "part time").

I still think it is that naughty little pickup coil; they were very problematic in that they would develop broken leads, which would result in intermittent contact inside the lead insulation and usually it was located right before that connector on the module.

Tryin' to help,

Allan

If dist has vacuum advance on it you can try applying vac and unhooking hose couple times ,,,if bad wire in pickup coil this will usually find it . Seen lot of rotors burned through on these also , but usually not that intermittant. One other thing is make sure your not losing power to dist power supply . Connections , connections ,connections !! From batt to starter , grounds , and sometimes junction block on firewall .

I"ll go along with what some of the others have been telling you---- If it were mine, I"d start with checking the coil. I"ve had the wire break inside the insulation on the coil, and from outside appearnce, everything looked good, but GENTLY bending each little wire, I found one broken. I had a pick up coil go bad once on my wife"s car, but, in that case, the engine would die whenever you tried to accelerate---again, very small wires, plus you just about have to remove the distributor to get to it (it sits beneath the rotor/flyweights).
Good Luck!

I replaced the igniton module and condensor it has no points. The wires that go into the cap are real loose it has a red and green(??) wire. then there are 4 wires coming out of the ignitionmoduole to the top of dist. cap. I have raplaced the coil and parts no even three months ago.

1.) Have you replaced the PICKUP COIL (as others have suggested), which is located down below the rotor... you have to pull the distributor out of the engine, and remove the gear, and pull out the distributor shaft to get at the pickup coil.

2.) Replacing the condensor ain't gonna help, as in this application it's for radio noise suppression, and doesn't affect the spark, one way or the other.
