3 pt hydraulic problems

My neighbor has a JD compact tractor, I think it is a 950, and the 3 point is not lifting well. It is slow and sometimes pulsates as it is lifting. He changed the fluid, and the dealer told him that the filter was optional (and he does not have one). Still doing the same thing.

Without opening it up, I am suspecting that the pump is not getting proper flow of fluid feeding it. The level is good on the dipstick, but I was wondering if there would be a screen on the pickup, or a clog inside the line.

Any other thoughts as to where to start looking would be greatly appreciated.

Chuck

Just traded off my 750. No filter either. had a screen located on lower side of tranny, on the left side if memory serves. Held in place by three 10 mm bolts. Try removing and cleaning with lacquer thinner and compressed air. An owners manual should detail the prosess. Dealer may be able to detail a point in tranny to test with a pressure gauge to determine proper pump pressure.

Thanks Mike. That should give us a place to start. I really wanted to start with the easiest possible fix first. As it is the tractor is functional, and this isn't the best time to tear it down if not necessary.

How's things going for you? We finally got some much needed rain.

Chuck
