OT So just how smart is a coyote?

For reasons best known to herself a coyote has denned under our back barn, rather close to the tractor's storage bay and the abandoned trench silo where I dump leaves and yard junk.

We have established a routine. I arrive with golf cart towing a squeaking trailer, back over to the pit about fifty feet from her den, pointedly ignore her while I unload the trailer.

She takes her time about getting up, then strides out, stretches, shakes, and, glaring balefully at me, walks slowly away until she gets to a rail fence. Sometimes she stands on the fence for a few more evil looks, but this evening she headed off into the field beyond to look for mice.

My wife had stowed away on the golf cart this time for the show. She was most impressed with the critter, especially with its apparent intelligence: over the years this coyote seems to have decided that the humans on the farm are no threat to her, but still she keeps a respectful distance. My wife wondered why the vixen (coyette?) chose a den near humans where there is lots of wild cover around.

Even when my parents had sheep they never lost any to predators. At the moment there is no livestock on the farm and we are looking forward to watching the little coyote pups (cubs?).

Any interesting coyote stories?

I have only killed one coyote at my current place, but I shoot at them with my .22 every time I get a chance.

We have gone through about 3 outside cats a year for the last 5 years.(as in get 3 new cats and they are all gone by the end of the year, get 3 new cats, repeat, repeat)

They do okay as kittens when they stay near the house but as they get older and start to wander they don't make it back.

Any tricks to keeping cats alive in coyote country?

I got a story to share. One night, at my grandma's and grandpa's house my grandpa heard yelping and barking. Tried to find out what it was but couldn't. So the next morning, he comes outside to see what had happened. Now he has two small barns, one for tools and the other for storage. The first small barn with the tools had scratches all over the new Plywood he had put up to make more room. Looking closer, they dug up the dirt from underneath it but didn't get far. In between the the addition and the original part, there was a hole that they scrattched at to make it bigger to get inside. They chewed and scrattched a 4X4 beam which is gone and ripped the old plywood out of place to get inside the addition again. There was a hole inside the new addition which a family of rabbits were living in. NO RABBITS WERE MISSING!!! All this effort for nothing. Later on, I take the husband and wife (Rabbits) to my house only for the wife which was pregnet, only to get hit by a car and the husband to go missing. Poor Rabbits. Coyotes do at least know how to get their next meal.

I don`t know if coyotes are smart but they are adaptive to almost any environment. In the late 60`s I worked 2nd shift on the Seattle waterfront and at midnite on the way home up Queen Anne Hill I would often see a coyote lope across the street. Lots of brush and trees gave it the cover it needed right in the heart of the city. Here in N. Idaho they are all around our property and we tolerate them but not around the barn or house.

I was on the 401 near the T I bridge recently, saw the biggest healthyist looking coyote ever. Middle of the day. When they get too comfortable around people, Id get nervous. Lou

We once lost a newborn calf to a coyote attack. My Dad saw it happening, but was too far away to prevent it.

One of our Hereford cows had just given birth out in a pasture about 3/8 of a mile from the buildings. A couple of coyotes decided to try to get the baby calf and the mama cow started to try to stomp the coyotes. Unfortunately she was right over her calf and managed to step on its head, killing the calf almost instantly. By the time my Dad got there, the coyotes had run off and eventually the cow calmed down enough for him to check the calf. He left the calf there, so I suppose the coyotes ended up dining on it anyway.

We hunted coyotes for years around our ranch. I don't think I ever got 3 in a year, but sure kept them very wary of humans. I took some long shots with my old 30-30 and saw a few seem to go down, but was never able to find the carcasses. I killed one less than 10 feet from me with a handgun--I wondered if there was something very wrong with that coyote, since I had never been that close to an uncaged live coyote before.

Our old ranch was subdivided into 10 to 40 acre parcels and now there are lots more people living around here than when I was a kid. So I have to be a LOT more careful about shooting. Funny thing is that there now seem to be more coyotes than ever around here. I hear them most nights and find tracks in my yard.

Others my disagree, but if I had a coyote denning on my property and had any chance to do so at all, I would shoot that coyote ASAP.

Coyotes are very smart animals, are interesting to watch and probably eat a whole bunch of mice and other small animals. But they will also take your barn cats and any other small animal you might have outside. In my opinion, a coyote is something I want to fear me and stay far away from me and my stuff. Good luck!

Hal's comments all make good sense. But the only potential prey I see on the farm now are mice, and some of them are big buisers: when the bushog goes past I often uncover field mice or rats that are about six inches long. There are, however, no groundhogs on the property. The barn mice seem to be controlled by racoons, but they are filthy creatures. I prefer the coyote. One cat lives at the house and shows good survival strategies.

In the absence of livestock this seems to have produced a balance of sorts. If I get ducks or chickens, of course, out will come the rifle at the first ruffled feather, but in the meantime, she is welcome to all the woodchucks and mice she can eat.

I probably should have mentioned that I started hunting when I was nine. My dad once dumped a coyote at 400 yards, shooting offhand from his back porch with open sights on a .300 Savage. With some justification he claimed it was the shot of a lifetime.

Then he started watching young foxes and coyotes growing up and lost interest in hunting them.

My brother has never had a problen with coyotes when raising his cattle. His problem was with with dogs which run in packs and chased the cows until they got so stressed they would sometimes die. Also the two legged coyotes who would somehow catch a small calf and take it. He was able to handle the dog problem, but not the two legged problem. Stan in calif.

..whats your method of trapping sucess?...bait, trap style, etc. I would like to reduce the population around here, don't have time to hunt them, but wouldn't mind checking traps though.

I usually take care of 25-30 coons a year and 1/2 dozen possums. She can handle a coon and tears apart possums.... I don't think she run fast enough and I don't want to lose her. thanks. Hound

Rod, I agree with the others about cyotes (spelled it the way I say it) They are one of the most smart, adaptive animals around.
We had one In the Okla panhandle that came in the barn at night and would clean out the dry dog food container, It took 2 weeks to figure it out, but when we did....KA-BOOOOOM one dead cyote, and the regular dog food consumption returned.
I personally would not let a cyote den up on my place. I will, have and still shoot a shotgun in their direction at night. They will leave then things don't suit their likeing.
Later,
John A.

Here in Ohio they are finding them with rabbies and it is becoming a problem. A man was attacked by one while he was riding a bicycle in the metro park. They claim the coyote had rabbies. A park spokesman said that it was protecting its pups and in a week or so the pups would be on their own. He didn"t say if he thought the rabbies would go away in a week. I guess he is what they call an "expert".

Ever read Wiley E. Coyote"s business card?

Card says he"s a genius.

And from some of the mis-engineered stuff I"ve encountered at work that was designed by alleged "genius" people, I"d say the card was pretty well accurate.

no real intereting stories....just a fact that i am completely obcessed with hunting them!!! out here on the plains what you are doing would be a crime worthy of strict talkin to from the county judge! on a lighter note, yes they are a very smart animal and as much as i love to kill them i do admire them greatly. there is one in particular that lives in my area that i have been chasing for almost 4 years now. he is one smart devil and always seems to be one step ahead of me. i know who he is everytime and he knows me. to me that is what it's all about.

"They love cats and small dogs"

Reminds me of a lawyer friend of mine who helpedme get rid a couple more intrusive coyotes that lost their fear of humans. I was getting afraid that they might go after my two year old son and he told me he'd come out and get help.

About 8:00 he showed up with this little puffy poodle that belonged to his wife. I couldn't believe that he had brought this little buffy dog to my farm. He tied the dog to the space light pole in the back yard and we proceded to have a few cold ones while he showed me the finer points of his Colt AR15. About 10:00 it was good and dark and we started to hear the poodle whimper, flipped the space light on to reveal the coyotes creeping up on him. For a lawyer he got off three rounds on three targets in about 2 seconds - all head shots. I quit giving him a hard time about his "hunting dog", although his wife wonders why all his freinds call the dog "Bait".

That was a great story! If coyotes would limit their food source to mice, groundhogs, and other related rodents/unwanted species, they would be welcome. But they don't, so they receive the alternative flying lead diet.

nobody has small dogs and the farm cats are pretty smart, i have only lost three over the last couple of years. people don't live real close out here, in my particular area the farms are less than one per square mile. i'm the only one on my section and same goes for the neighbors with alot of empty sections in between. coyotes are as common as cows out here. i love spring time though because all the counties and ranchers pay a nice bounty.
