Just sitting here looking at an original owners manual for a Farmall H, and I noticed that the tractor serial number has actually been recorded inside the front cover just as IH intended. The number written down is FBH 20916. Just curious whether or not anyone actually has this tractor? An odditie is that the manual has a print date of 4-5-44, and the tractor would have to be much earlier.

I've got a 400 and a manual for a 400 with delivery page all filled out to a farmer 3 miles away that sold out 20 years ago & has since passed. I bought the 400 16 years ago and totally forget where I acquired the manual. Delivery dealer went out of business 30 yrs ago. Could well be that this tractor & manual got split up & back together again.

I'm thinking that anyone careful enough to record the serial number in the manual would be careful enough to send the manual with the tractor when he sold it. I'm guessing the tractor with that serial number went to the boneyard years ago and that's why the manual became available for sale.

I suppose it's possible that some dealer trying to maximize profit would take in a tractor with manual and then sell them separately.

Jim, I think you're jumping to conclusions here, saying someone carefull enough to mark down the serial number in the owner's manual would be sure to send the manual with the tractor when it was sold!

It sounds good in theory, but so often a machine is sold after the owner's death, by cold and uncaring relatives, interested only in the $$$$!

That's certainly one reason tractors and manuals get split up!

I am pretty sure this manual is one that I found in an antique store, would be a safe bet it came from an estate auction. The tractor may have been sold years earlier when the farmer retired.

Mornin',

My 966 manual has serial # 029860 written in with an inkpen. Who owns that tractor? 'Cause I've got your original manual. :>)

My 666 manual has someone else's serial # in it too. Hey, why is it an inkpen? What other kind of pen is there? Pigpen, maybe? But why would someone write with a pigpen? LOL!
