In my area, a 2-year old girl was killed in ATV accident. I don't know the make of the ATV. Age 9 male was driving with age 5 male and age 2 girl passengers. Driving slowly in first gear. Driver stopped the AtV and the others were getting off when the girl somehow fully opened the throttle while she was standing to the running board. ATV hit nearby concrete wall head on. 5 year old is recovering. Seems that tractor or ATV should have engine stopped before dismounting.

I understand where you guys are coming from but I also agree that it was a tragic accident. I know it is easy to blame the parrents. From what I read the 9 year old driver was going slow in first gear. He had come to a stop. I would GUESS the 2 year old was riding in front of the driver and the 5 year old behind him. It is only natural for a 2 year old to grab anything to hold on to and in this case sadly it was the throttle. Hind sight is 20/20. If it was out of gear this or the engine was turned off this wouldn't have happened. But they weren't and it did. A saftey switch on the seat would not of prevented this from happening becouse the 9 and maybe 5 year old would still be seated. If an adult had been driving it still most likely would have happened. When I was 9 years old I was Driving a B John Deere pulling a 5 disk oneway or a tumble type stalk cutter and tandom disk 2 miles from the house at the second place we farmed. When I was 10 I got a single shot .22 for Christmas and could go hunt with my friends without asking. It was not only me, but most all of my classmates that grew up in the country did this. Noone thought anything about it and none of us were hurt or killed. When did things change? How old does a child have to be now to stay home for 1-2 hours after school until there parents get in from work? I don't think anyone can put an age on it except lawyers if something goes wrong in that 1-2 hours. I an 62 years old and have an ATV that I or my sons or daughters-in-law take my 2,4,6 and 11 year old riding on, also at slow speed but only one at a time. I will now make sure the engine is off before they get on or off. I would bet the 9 year old driver of this ATV was good driving it. Otherwise he sure wouldn't have been allowed to ride the others on it. If he had been hot roding or doing wheelies, then hang him, but he wasn't. This is very sad and my prayers go out to all of them, but not blame. It was an accident.

No ATV accident in reply to Bus Driver, 04-20-2005 15:59:39
That was no accident. It was a collision and death caused by machine operation by persons untrained and/or incapable due to being physically and/or mentally incapable. An ATV is not a toy. An ATV is not a baby sitter. Where were the parents or responsible adults? No different than someone getting tangled in a pto shaft. Or a loader roll-over on a side hill or with a too high, too heavy & too fast. Or no more an accident than someone driving too fast on slippery roads.

It is fully the parents fault, here, but surely they will carry the pain the rest of their life. Still hard not to judge them though. Something else that chills me just as much is a neighbor who otherwise is a decent parent but for some reason when they get on the riding lawn mower they throw out their common sense and carry their child on it. I mean that REALLY chills me. May as well gripe about the fools that ride down the road with a dog on their lap too. I do not appreciate their ignorance risking my life or my loved ones lives on the highway over something so stupid. Sometimes I wish I were a cop when I see this. Sorry bout the long post.

Many parents ate trying to push there kids into being hotshots. I HAD a freind who used to come to our property and ride atv.s . Well when there oldestr was Two (2) (I s**t you not) they bout him a 120 ZR and A Little 90 CC four wheeler. They put the kid on it and took off riding. The kid went right up the ditch and almost got hit by a car. Did they stop and be responsible . NO they just continued on. I no longer associate with them and I also notified proper people after my Opinions were answered by < I dont want my kid to be a puss! Stupids SOB's like that just need a good beating. As far as I know the kids arre some how still alive and the parents are enjoying an happy abusive and unfaithful life. Sad thing is I know bout 1/2 dozen people that live like that round here. Makes ya wonder how many kids out there are at risk, just being puppeted to increase the manhood of there father.

NO ,I disagre...ATVs are not toys for 2 or even 5 & 9 yr. olds.....a adult should have been taking the childern for rides, one at a time....

Because of poor supervision ,I don't need a law stating my tractor will shut down every time I get off.....Got too mcch of this junk on my lawn tractor....If you dont know how to operate it safely stay off of it.

Don, I use to fell the same way about the seat saftey switch on my riding tractor, Intill one day I was mowing on a slight grade intill the main drive belt came off, & I started to roll off the hill backwards the clutch/brake didn't slow things down any, any way I could get off of the mower & ending up rolling the thing & it had me pinned under it. thanks to the good Lord & that @#$%ned safety switch I am alive today, other than a few brusises & scrapes I walked away. I just know if it wasn't for that saftey switch I would of been a DEAD MAN. So THINK before if you decide to by pass on of the saftey switches. Dave F.

So Don your wife has not flipped the lawn tractor or driven into the stream yet,eh.Theres a reason for the saftey switches.I kinda like them.Mine only shuts off from the seat switch when in gear or blade spinning.Out of gear you can dismount and stay running. Not annoying.

No ATV supervision needed around here. I won't allow the things on the place. Problem solved.

A classmate of my wife's whose husband WORKED FOR one of the major ATV manufacturers lost her child when a mechanical failure (broken axle, I believe) occured on their 4-wheeler. That was a tough funeral.

What I can't understand is parents who would NEVER consider letting an underage kid drive the family car, but will turn the kids loose with a souped-up ATV or snowmobile with a "hotter" power-to weight ratio, (and less safety features and driver protection) than a sports car, without giving it a second thought!

It was a very unfortunate accident. There is no good excuse for why it happened. A young girl is dead, and some folks will have to carry that with themselves for the rest of their lives. A horrible tragedy. My condolences to her surviving family, and a prayer that such a young innocent one is in heaven seated beside God, now.

A couple of weekends ago I'd taken down some oak trees, cut them to size and was dragging them off. Well, I had my sister helping me, and she was on the tractor. She'd backed up and I was hooking the chain up to the drawbar when the tractor suddenly came flying back. It was very close. I made it out of there by pushing myself off of a rotating tire, and length the the tractor was straddling the trunk when she stopped it. It happened very fast. I didn't know she was in gear riding the clutch, and she'd moved up into a higher range. When her foot slipped off of the clutch I was bending over dead center on that drawbar and thought I was dead. I made some dumb mistakes and lived to learn from them, that time.

Life is dangerous to begin with, and stupid mistakes...

Mark

Thats those throttle lever types she leaned on.I have a ATV and Im not going to preach saftey to guys that know tractors, but thats how a good freind and experienced motorcycle rider was killed.I have leaned on it myself doing yardwork on the ATV leaving it in gear and leaning forward to grab a garden tool.Bike was still in reverse and I went flying backwards with my stomach pushing more throttle open.Lucky to be all clear behind.I have found many way to have a close call during the summer beer season.By the way a twist throttle is even more dangerous on them ,I tried that and bumps make you give unwanted throttle twists.Went back to the lever throttle. It does have a warning label right on it about no passengers.I have an 80 cc but Im afraid to sell it due to my liability if something happens. They are tools like knives and guns you must use them responsibly.Still a terrible tragedy Im sorry to hear about.

I just cant imagine kids that age operating an ATV. I'm full grown, on the back side of 35, and am reminded every single day of my accident last fall. GOing slow, being careful and still rolled it end over end in a sinkhole. Broken collar bone, torn rotator cuff, 2 tendons ripped loose from my skull. Been 2 operations so far, 2-3 more to go. Hurts every hour of every day. If the wife hadnt gotten sick I would probably still be pinned together.

2 years old???

I am an ATV Safety Instructor. Tragic though this accident may be, there were several safety violations that caused this accident. ALL brands of ATVs have several Safety decals on them. A rather large one states: NO PASSENGERS. Depending on the size of the machine, it also NO RIDER UNDER AGE 16.

That is certainly tragic and I feel for the family but I can't help but wonder why kids that age were allowed on it in the first place??
