It is normal to have some gasses escaping the vent tube. On turbo charged Fords even quite a lot. With 'real' blow by Ive not been able to see the hood for the smoke coming out of the crankcase vent pipe when straining the engine. Thats when you KNOW there is a problem.

WHEN THE spark explodes the gases in the cylinder if the rings dont seal real good some of the exploded gases BLOW BY them and excape to the crank case and excape out the crankcase ventalation system.... Loss of power and puffy smoke out of breathers...Hope this helps

In general terms it refers to compression leaking past the piston rings and pressurizing the crankcase. A sign of worn rotating parts, pistons, cylinder bores and valves. It can be expensive to repair. The crankcase breather will emit some quantity of smoke.

when rings on a piston get worn pressures from the fuel explosions leak past the rings and into the crankcase. a good indication of this is excessive gray smoke coming from breather. and low compression readings are usually associated with this also. HTH

Fuel/air mixture isn't supposed to explode. That is rapid uncontrolled burning with very high pressure spikes. Called knocking or detonation. Broken cranks, spun bearings, bent roads, crushed ring lands, broken rings, cracked pistons and blown head gaskets are the result. Combustion is supposed to be a progressive burn from the spark plug to the combustion chamber edges. Or a progressive burn of fuel oil in a diesel as fuel is injected. No piston/ring to cylinder wall seal is perfect. It's the degree of leakage or blowby. Not if blowby exists. Blowby is noticed when the crankcase vent system cannot handle the combustion pressure bypassed into the crankcase.
