Bought a '96 2500 4X2 diesel with 74K. Tried to change oil monday. The drain plug had been torqued way too much and the head had been cracked. When I tried to replace with 66 Foot Pounds the head sheared off. After three attempts to find a replacement, two attempts at Dodge dealers a new correctly formed plug and proper seal was installed. It still continues to seep a bit. The tech has the plug installed in excess of 75 foot pounds and I've been told if it continues to leak a new pan will be needed. My question? Has anyone else had a similiar experience and if so, how tight did you turn the plug to get the seeping to stop? Without the threads stripping or the head shearing off as I've experienced.
Thanks,

My 94 Dodge/Cummins has a allen wrench drain plug 3/8 I think, All I use is a normal allen wrench and tighten it up. No where near 66 foot pounds!!

I have a few things that the oil plug likes to leak or sweat a bit. I clean the threads on the plug off good with brake clean. Then dab a bit of silicone on the threads when I put it back in. NO more leaks after that.

Thanks for all the help.
Think I'll get with Geno's for an easy touch type plug.

Common problem on the TDR board. Check link below for updated replacement plugs. Hope this helps!

We have over 20 trucks at work ,all with various size cummins engines. All the cummins's with aluminum oil pans ,the drain plugs tighten themselves unbelievably tight.Hand tight at an oil change and the next time 3/4 impact to loosen. We have taken to using teflon thread tape on the drain plugs ,but have not been at it long enough to see if it makes any difference except for no leaks. We have (9) 8.3L 505ci cummins's with steel oil pans and all of them have had big nuts or wrenches welded to the drain plug at some time in it's life. Too soft of metal in the plug I guess.

I have 2 Dodge/Cummins trucks, a 92 & a 2001. I have never used anywhere near that much torque on the drain plugs of either... I do not use a torque wrench on them, but I do have a feel for torque, since I use a torque wrench on a regular basis tightening fasteners on dies. I would guess that I tighten mine to no more than 25 to 30 ft/lbs. I wonder if yours might have been cross-threaded at some time.

Been there, done that. Christmas Day, 2000, and it was my first oil change. I torqued to spec and fractured the head. Had to weld it back together to get me by until I ordered a new aftermarket plug from Genos Garage online. I ordered one with a finger touch ball valve and put a little sealer on it and have not removed it since. I thought at the time that I had damaged the pan threads. Probably not. Turns out to be a very common problem. Read all about it on Turbodieselregister.com. Many, many posts over the last 5 years about it. Main thing is to ignore spec and tighten just enough to keep it in... Unless pan is damaged like yours may be. If I was in your boat, I would look at some of the plug alternatives Genos offers because changing the pan on that engine is quite a chore, and not cheap either.

Good luck.

On mine it is not how tight you put in it is how hard it comes out , It takes about all i can pull with my long 1/2 inch breaker bar and i keep thinking that i move the truck sideways a couple inches. And i have never torqued mine it gets tight on it's owen.

I would think a better gasket could be used, an o-ring or maybe just teflon tape,,just to over tighten is not the remedy,,,,billy

Seal the plug good then use an oil extractor to change your oil from now on.
