Looking at a used anvil a guy has, I want it more than he necessarily wants to sell it so I have to give him some type of a reasonable offer. It's a big old brute, 95 pounds and in pretty decent shape. What's the going (fair) rate for stuff like this?

This got me to thinking about our anvil that has been in the family for four generations. What will happen to it when I'm gone. Stan

chief, Perhaps you shouldnt worry so much about what happens to the anvil AFTER your gone as much as the possibility of it being THE REASON you"re gone. They make great anchors, and have been aknown to hold a body safely in Davy Jones"s locker for eons.

Make sure it's a forged steel anvil and not cast iron - big difference in price.

Around here (Colorado)

Forged steel anvil in good shape, like others have said $2.00 to $3.00 per lb.

Cast Iron - Maybe $0.30 per lb.

If its from ACME anvil Co, it is probably worth quite a bit, however, I there may be a safety issue with these anvils, specificly with the bungee chords.

I've been watching the auctions for an anvil the past 3-4 years. Seems like the going price is closer to $3 per pound.

Think of it as a "cutting board" for a shop.

Large piece of steel, used for dropping on cartoon character's heads. It makes them fold up like an accordion. Sometimes they are packed in cartoon character's parachutes instead of a chute. In that case, the character makes a deep hole when they hit the ground, in the shaped of an outline of the character.

Now you went and got me started Fred! All I hear is how TV shows with violence lead to adults commiting that same violence. I was/am a RoadRunner fanatic. I've seen about every episiode of the show. Yet, I have NEVER dropped an anvil on anyone. I have yet to paint a tunnel on the side of a mountain... No tricking my friends into falling off cliffs.

Well, there was this dynamite thing..... ..... ...

I wondered who it was who slipped that stick of dynamite in my lunch box. By the way, does ACME ship UPS or Fed Ex?

I believe the only new anvils available are synthetic, which makes the old/natural ones so valuable. The last anvil tree died out in the '30s, although they once were as common as the American Chestnut..... ....with apologies to Gary Larsen's "The Far Side".

I have an old 70 pounder that I paid a dollar a pound for 10 years ago. I think it's worth 70 bucks today. But they are worth more when you need one.

buck a pound. You'll need to make sure it doesn't have a crack in it...get a ball peen hammer and hit it here and there to make sure it sounds the same...should have a nice ring to it.

95 lbs is a small one...200lbs+ is a brute.

I have my Dad's old anvil (about 150 lbs.) but I don't have any of the "attachments" that fit into the square hole. I think they would come in handy at times even tho I don't have a forge.

That square hole can be used to make square pegs outta round ones.
