I just learned from my Son in Maine that my Grandson has officially "Hit the beach" in the good old U.S. of A. after completing his 2 year hitch in Iraq. It was a much more uplifting phone call than the one I recieved from him a couple of months ago when my Son called to say that the Mess Hall in Mosul in which My Grandson had just left 10 minutes before hand had just been hit by enemy fire killing 14 of his comrades. I hadn"t slept a full night uninterrupted since, and the anxiety level was one I can"t begin to explain. To know that he has returned safe and sound is, in my opinion, a testament to the power of prayer, as only by God"s grace do some of us get our heros back while others must endure unending and unimaginable grief. I know that to everyone else, he is probably just another soldier who was doing his job, and that may will be correct, because I also see him in that light, but he also is someone I love with all my heart, and the fact that he came back from harm"s way is cause for much celebration, at least in this household. It sure is going to make tinkering with the old Iron, and farming a lot more enjoyable this year.

Paul: So glad to hear you got the good news. I know you have been agonizing over this on for months. On the one hand your proud they serve country, and on other hand you fear for their safety while doing so. It's a no win situation until over. God bless.

Paul,Without people like your Grandson,we would be in a heck of a shape, we are proud that these troops are volunteers, our senior in high school has enlisted in the Marines, and leaves for basic 2 hours after the graduation ceremony, not even time for a party, my wife and I are worried, but want to support his decision, he is excited, and has always wanted to do this since he was a little kid. Thanks to your Grandson for his service! Uncle

Paul, This old Viet Vet sends a saulte to your grandson. I know you must be proud for many reasons. I'm not upset about how things were when I served in the Nam. That's just the way it was. I did my tour and made it home. I salute all of our service men and women serving our country. May God bless them and their families. (I hope this post isn't too late for him to receive my salute. Don't get to check this site as often as I'd like.)

After you see him and things calm down and you catch up, please say "thank you from Tom in R.I." When I got out of the service or was home on leave during the Viet Nam war, it wasn't apopular thing to be in the service and nobody ever has thanked me for doing my part. Over the last 10 or so years I have begun to feel proud for having served. I know things are different now, just the same I want him to know someone appreciates his sacrifice.

Tom, You have my Thanks, and I always thought it was an unconditional Thanks by every American, I was 6 years old when my brother left for Nam...He was my hero and I always looked up to him, I was proud to sit next to him( in uniform) at my sisters high school graduation in '67 while on leave. He is no longer living, a big loss for my family, I was 14 when he died. I did not have the opportunity to serve in the military, but I am proud of those that have and do so, even though I don't say it to every vet I see.He owned several Ford Mustangs, I have a project Stang now in his honor, someday I will drive it to the Dairy Queen, as I think he would have done, as you see , he was my hero....You are somebodys' Hero too, they just may not say it out loud...Uncle

I will take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the service you gave for OUR Country. YOu are right in that we have not put ourselves out enough to thank the Viet Nam Vets for their contribution. I also thank you and everyone else who responded to my post. I will copy everyones responses and mail them to my Grandson to share and extend to his entire unit. While I said the did 2 years, I realized that it wasnt quite 2 yrs, but rather a tad bit over 20 months. Still seemed like an eternity to me and my family. Thanks Guys.

Paul,

Great news and I can't think of a better person to receive such a gift. Sounds like your grandson must of followed in his grand dads footsteps. Tell him "Thank You" for me and savor the moment.

I can remember when you posted he was going over there. Doesn't seem like two years to me but I doubt you can say the same. Glad to hear that he came through it in one piece.

He may be just another soldier doing his job to every one but your family but I can under stand your joy.

With a daughter in law as a active duty marine of 8 years; A son with 4 years active duty marines and now 2 years army reserve; And on top of that a Marine brat grand daughter I can tell you full well you are not the only one that has felt like telling the whole world when something like this happens.

Tell him THANK YOU from me for keeping us safe. We sleep in peace every night because he; and others like him stand a post in a far away land.
